When Rabbi Yehoshua of Kutna returned from his journey to
the Holy Land, his townspeople asked him what he saw there.
"I found the land desolate," he replied. "Jerusalem
is in ruins, and of our glorious Temple, only a humble stone
wall remains standing. But there is one thing that has survived
intact - one thing that exists in the Holy Land exactly as
it did in the days of the Temple."
"And what is that?" they asked.
"Baseless hatred and animosity among Jews," said
Rabbi Yehoshua, "which, as the Talmud recounts,[1]
was the cause of the Destruction. That has remained unchanged."
