Vayikra

It is all about coming close – not close to something outside but to something inside. It is the best of offerings. It is how we altar our selves and burn up to heaven. But beware, fires are dangerous: after inaugurating the Temple, Nadav and Avihu tried to digest and instead were consumed. The laws of kosher, purity, ritual bathing, birth, contamination, and purity again lead into Yom Kippur, which in turn leads into intimacy, morality, holiness, and loving your neighbor. There is a theme here: to come close, we offer our selves, and we become pure. Priestly perfection is versed, as are the festivals. Now unto agriculture: every seven years a sabbatical, every seven sabbaticals a jubilee. These are the paths and their consequences. Will we answer the call and come close, come pure?
