Dear Rabbi Jacobson,
I belong to a reform temple and my rabbi told me that the reform movement does not believe in life after death. If this is true then what is life all about? Please let me know what is correct.
Thank you very much.
Dear [name redacted],
I cannot explain your Rabbi’s words, but I can say unequivocally that the eternal life of the soul is fundamental to Judaism. Indeed you emphasized its importance in the question that you asked: “If (there is no life after death) then what is life all about?”
I discuss the concept in my book Toward A Meaningful Life in the chapter on Death and Grieving. You can also find more abut this at our website, www.meaningfullife.com. Go to the radio show archives, to the transcript of the show on Reincarnation and Afterlife.
If we can be of any further assistance, please write again.
Blessings and best wishes,
