Balancing Individuality and the Community

Does religion demand conformity? Many people struggle with this aspect of religion – where the “I” can lost in the “we”. Even if it’s seemingly for a positive reason such as communal values or working together for a greater purpose, it often seems as if our individuality is compromised.

In this week’s Torah Portion, Vayakhel, we learn a vital lesson on how to uncover our unique voice and how our individuality does not compromise our love for others. We discover that true and healthy individuality, just like true and healthy love, is harmony within diversity — two people uniting while retaining the integrity of each self.
