Do You Know Your Shadows?

The Black Hole of Our Psyches
Three Weeks Workshop

Black holes in the cosmos are a fairly recent discovery (some still consider it a theory). First predicted in the 18th century, physicist’s have developed the theory behind the black hole phenomenon based on Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. They have defined formulas and observed the super-powerful effects of these dark masses on their surroundings. But how about the black holes in our psyches? What do we know about them, and their impact on our lives? Based on the core principle of microcosm/macrocosm — that the human being is a universe in microcosm — we can identify amazing parallels between the black holes in heaven and their dark counterparts lurking in our souls.

Don’t let the name fool you: a black hole is anything but empty space. Rather, it is a great amount of matter packed into a very small area (think of a star ten times more massive than the Sun squeezed into a sphere approximately the diameter of New York City). Black holes are the most powerful objects in the universe. Nothing, not even light, can escape the gravitational pull of a black hole. A black hole is a region of spacetime from which gravity prevents anything, including light, from escaping. By its very nature, a black hole doesn’t emit any signals or information about itself, confounding us even more in our attempt to understand its properties. Astronomers now believe there are many of them out in the cosmos, swallowing up planets, even entire stars in violent feeding frenzies.

What does this teach us about the black holes in our psyches? What can we learn from black holes about our fears, shame and low points? What can they “reveal” to us about the dark secrets we carry, especially when we succumb to our most basic desires? In our darkest moments and most hidden corners do we also exert an energy that prevents anything from escaping, swallowing up everything around it in a feeding frenzy, even information about itself? Can we harness this invisible force?

Please join Rabbi Jacobson in this unique Three Weeks workshop on the fascinating and surprising parallels between black holes without and within. Identify the cosmic root of all black holes — the dark and mysterious tzimtzum, which left a black hole where existence emerges. Travel down the wormholes of your psyche and discover the enormous power of your shadows and the astonishing energy they contain. Learn how to unleash these forces that have never seen the light of day to transform your life and your relationships.
