Does My Job Define Me?

If someone asked you “who are you?” would you give them your business card? That’s what most people do! But your work is only what you do, not who you are. So why do so many of us define our identities by our jobs? The obvious reason is because that’s what we are consumed with most of the day and involved in most of our adult lives. It may also be a convenient way to (consciously or unconsciously) avoid peering into our own hearts and souls and discovering who we really are — our true identities.

The same is true with many things in our lives that we identify ourselves by, although they may not reflect our inner selves. How many people define their self-worth by their net-worth, or by looks, appearances — all masks that may enhance who we are, may make us look good, but are not our true essence. When you wear a mask long enough, sometimes you become your mask… How sad… How much of your own self remains hidden even from you? Do you know how to live, or only how to work? Ask yourself: Do you live to work, or work to live? Have you lost sight of your soul? What is your identity? Your soul or your business card? Does what you do define who you are or the other way around?

It is time to learn how to discover your true identity and discover the difference between form and function, means and ends, and how to strengthen your character and assert who you are — your true inner self.
