Why You Should Let Go of Control

Why do people want to be in control? Like many personality challenges, control is often the result of an insecure ego. Insecure people need to control things in order to feel a sense of power, security, or importance. Besides producing anxiety, the impetus to maintain control blocks out spontaneity, imagination, magic and the unlimited possibilities of life — which is why it is a good idea to work toward letting go of control.

People who don’t feel the need to be in control appreciate the unknowns. Mysteries, for them, are fascinating adventures, rather than worries. These people, who experience the beauty of letting go and not being in control, have something in common: They are comfortable with vulnerability. They are open to taking risks. They dare to dare. They are happy to say, “I don’t have it all figured out.”

Who says you have to have it all figured out? Who says you have to have everything under your control?

Most of the greatest explorers, entrepreneurs, artists, and leaders have embraced the unknown, the uncontrollable. They have been willing to dive into the uncharted, and see what it is all about. That’s what makes them truly great. They embrace it all — the mistakes and failures along with the successes. If you want to become a greater person, find the beauty in not having all the answers. Celebrate the mysteries.
