I was 22, and I was bursting of joy. I was in the office about to receive my valid passport to visit my father, whom I had not seen for 20 years. It took several years to reach this moment, as my applications had been repeatedly denied to me. It seemed unreal when I stepped out to the street holding it.
Of course, I was calm and collected, just murmuring to my sister, who came with me.
Once we were outside, I got startled. I saw someone standing there with a two year old child. I told my sister that we should run away, and we hid in a basket store nearby. I did not want the man to notice me.
By the end of that same day we fell in love and tied our lives together for 30 years — Adar 9 will be his 11th Yahrtzeit –, and forever.
I was modest, shy, reserved, but sparkling inside. I was friendly and interested. I did not know it then, but I was ready to accompany him to the end of the world. This was the start of my adult life.
