One who loans money to a pauper in his time of need, of him the verse (Isaiah 58:9) says: “Then you shall call and G-d He will answer, you shall cry out and He will say: Here I am.”

Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch interpreted the Talmud’s words thus: “One who loans money to a pauper in his, the lenders, time of need…” One who persists in helping others even when he himself is experiencing hardship is truly deserving of G-d’s ear.
