Are we alone in our pain? Does anyone cry for a child forsaken by its mother? Every bird watches over her fledglings. Who watches over us? Is there any hope for someone who has grown up in a broken home and a shattered nest?

Why is there a mitzvah (in this week’s Torah portion) to send away a mother from her nest – isn’t that a cruel thing to do?

In a moving prayer, based on the mitzvah of sending away the mother from her nest, the Baal Shem Tov teaches us how a suffering mother arouses the deepest empathy for all the abandoned children and for all the broken nests in this world…
