Shabbos is the most spiritual day of the week. So why do we pleasure it with wine and meat?
Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov explained:
“Once there was a prince who was taken captive in a foreign land and thrown into a dungeon filled with common criminals. One day, after many months of no contact with home, he received a letter from his father the king.
“His heart was overflowing with joy. But how could he rejoice, alone, in this dismal place, amidst all this crudity and despair? So he procured a barrel of vodka and threw a party for the entire prison, so that they, too, would rejoice with him…”
