Two Problems

The story is told of two of the Maggid’s[24] disciples who met and proceeded to lament their spiritual ills. “I don’t know what shall become of me, with all my sins,” said the one. “What shall I do with my sins?”

“My sins are the lesser of my problems,” countered his fellow. “For sins one can always repent. I’m far more troubled by the sorry state of my mitzvot. What shall I do with my mitzvot?”

Adapted from the teachings of the Rebbe by Yanki Tauber

[24] Rabbi DovBer, the “Maggid” of Mezeritch (d. 1772), was the second leader of the chassidic movement.
