Chanukah Night 5: Gratitude in the Journey

As the Chanukah light grows, so too does our clarity and perspective. A little light gives us basic understanding, but as the flame grows, we begin to see more of the bigger picture—like climbing a mountain, where each new height reveals a broader horizon. Life itself is like this journey: we often live it forwards, uncertain of our path, but only in looking backward do we connect the dots. Even setbacks or failures take their rightful place in the grand design, teaching us gratitude for the journey itself, not just the destination. The great mystics remind us that G-d leads our footsteps, but how we use those steps—our choices, our actions—is ours. Awareness and perspective allow us to see the hand of the Divine woven into every moment, even those we initially struggle to understand.

Every step of life carries meaning, often hidden in the seemingly small or mundane. It is not only the accomplishments that matter, but also the journey itself: the encounters, the blessings, the moments that may have been waiting for us from the beginning of time. Each moment holds the potential for goodness, connection, and mitzvot, if only we remain open to the unexpected. The Chanukah flame teaches us to see with clarity, to appreciate the divine choreography in our lives, and to embrace each step as an opportunity to recognize purpose, meaning, and light—even in the places we might least expect.
