The Open Tent: The Spiritual Power of Making Room for Others

A little girl once asked her pregnant mother, “Mommy, how do you have room inside you for another person?”

Think about that. Not just room in a little corner of your body, but room in your entire being—for another life, another person, another world.

How often do we struggle to make room for people outside of ourselves, let alone within us?

Even if you’ve never carried a child yourself, the question should fascinate us. What does it mean to truly make room for another person? To hold space for their needs, their feelings, their struggles, their very existence?

We live in a world driven by self-interest, in which most people are focused first and foremost on their own needs. that often tells us to look out for ourselves. Me first. My needs. My success. Survival of the fittest. Some even call it The Selfish Gene — our primal driving force is self preservation and perpetuation. But is that really the healthiest way to live?

Please join Rabbi Simon Jacobson as we discover that the deepest expression of love is the ability to make room for someone else within you—to recognize that life is not just about you. And just as importantly, to allow yourself to be welcomed into someone else’s life.

The difference between a life centered on “me, me, me” and one that creates space for others is profound. It has many far reaching implications. One leaves us isolated; the other opens us to connection, meaning, a love that transcends ourselves — and allows us to reach infinity itself.
