Life is a journey.
From the moment we are conceived, our journey begins. We grow, develop, and mature. We pass through childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and our later years. Along the way come twists and turns, triumphs and setbacks, moments of darkness and moments of great beauty.
But is there a map? A GPS that can help us navigate the terrain of life? Something that can help us understand the opportunities and challenges that await us, and guide us through them with greater wisdom and purpose?
The answer is yes.
The Torah provides us with a remarkable blueprint. Much of the Bible, especially the Book of Numbers (beginning in this week’s Torah portion) is devoted to the journeys of the Jewish people through the Sinai wilderness—from Egypt to the Promised Land. These 42 journeys are carefully recorded and documented.
The great mystic and founder of the Chassidic movement, Baal Shem Tov, teaches that these 42 journeys are not merely ancient history. They are the spiritual stages that every one of us travels throughout our lives. Most profoundly, they mirror the unfolding journey of a lifetime—from our earliest formative years to our final stages of growth and fulfillment.
We are not wandering aimlessly. We have a map. We have a blueprint.
This week, we begin a seven-part series: 42 Journeys of Your Life.
Each week we will explore, in progressive order, several of these journeys and uncover their relevance to our own lives. We begin where every great journey begins: the formative years, when the mission first takes shape and the soul begins its voyage into this world.
Please join Rabbi Simon Jacobson, and share this invitation with others. The insights of these journeys have the power to transform the way we understand our lives—and the path that lies ahead.
