Aquarius: Your Hidden Spiritual Power

What the Stars Say About You: Aquarius

Hi everyone, Simon Jacobson here, and we begin a new series: What the Stars Say About You. Aquarius is the first part of this new zodiac series. This program is dedicated by Alan Gordon in loving memory of his father and uncle, Baruch Yehuda Ben Shmuel. What do the stars say about you?

Let’s begin with a short introduction. By the very nature of the constellations of the zodiac, of the horoscope, it’s critical to always emphasize – at least the way I see it – not to get caught up in sensationalism and exotica. People often gravitate to that as a form of escape. I wouldn’t call it necessarily an excuse, but so to speak, to blame the stars for our behavior or for our good luck or bad luck really absolves us of the most important dignity of all – and that’s personal responsibility.

And yet we do know, in the Kabbalah and mysticism and other schools of thought, there is a concept of the signs; each month has a sign. But what are the details that come with that? So how do we look at it? Is it something that is nonsense? Is it something that has value? How much power does it have? Should I determine whom to date and what job to take based on different signs?

The way Jewish thought puts it is quite practical while also very mystical and spiritual, and that is: At the end of the day, we are all born with all kinds of predispositions and tendencies and inclinations. But nothing controls you. There is no such thing as a predestined future.

Now, part of our makeup, our DNA, our genetic makeup, is also when we’re born. And in that sense, yes, there are different times of the year that have their own – we’ll call predisposed – set of conditioned circumstances. But that doesn’t control us; it’s an inclination.

It’s like some people are born with a more aggressive nature, some are born with a more – a milder nature, some are more cerebral, some are more emotional. Some of that is genetic, from and hereditary; some is not. But the point is, just because we have a predisposition does not mean that defines who you are. And that’s critical.

How do the Kabbalists put it? That the – the Divine power that created all of existence also created seasons. We know there’s winter, there’s uh, spring, summer, and autumn. How do you like that? I remembered the seasons. There are times of the year where the energy is a very high energy, there’s times of joy, and there are times where it’s a more subdued energy. But these are energies, these are vibes, these are states of being. The question is how you’ll navigate it.

Just like if you’re out at sea and there’s a storm, and sometimes the water is calm. These are real circumstances, they’re real factors that have an impact on ours, but they don’t control us.

So in that context, there are times of the year – and here we’re talking about the months – each month has its so-called “energy of the month,” a predisposition, an inclination. So someone born in a certain time – yes, nothing wrong with saying – just like we’re born with certain personalities, that time of the year has a certain energy.

So to give it too much power and saying that energy defines what I’m going to be or who I am – that’s not correct. It defines your circumstances and defines opportunities as well as challenges, but now you need to navigate.

So anyone that over-depends on it – that becomes something, somewhat, as I said, absolving and losing the dignity of your choices. On the other hand, completely to ignore it – not necessarily. But everything with balance and moderation.

What Does Aquarius Symbolize?

With that said, so what do the stars tell them – tell about you? They’ll tell a lot. They’ll tell about those different so-called climates or archetypes, if you wish, or different personality types.

Now we’re in the month of Aquarius; in the Hebrew it’s called Shevat, the month of Shevat, which literally means “bucket,” to water bucket. Aquarius is “water carrier.”

So what is the energy of this month? What does it symbolize? And what does it tell us about someone who’s born at this time? And for that matter, even those of us not born in this time of the year, it’s still the time of the year that we have opportunities. What’s the opportunity of this month?

So what is “water carrier”? What is a water carrier? Sometimes people see that as almost a menial and dismissive type of position. Water carriers, wood choppers – are often at the bottom of the rung. Today we may not have those, uh, vocations, if you wish. But the times when there was – was not necessarily the highest level of work.

And yet, the water carrier plays a role that’s a tremendously important role. I mean, you think about it – is part of our own soul’s makeup that teaches us very valuable lesson – or lessons.

So on a very basic level, someone that delivers water, we know, is the essence of life.

That water – we couldn’t exist. So it really is the nourishment and the nurturing of everything that grows, including life ourselves.

That’s why when they look for water elsewhere, in other planets, water is always the first indicator, because without water there won’t be life, at least as we know it.

But what’s a water carrier? Water carrier is someone that brings you water, that delivers it to you. So one of the ways to understand that is this: In life you have two choices: You’re either a giver or a taker. I mean, obviously you can mix the two and be sometimes like this, sometimes like that, but it’s two different approaches to life.

Moses: The Ultimate Water Carrier

Moses, the great Moses – why was he called Moses, or Moshe in the Bible? Interestingly, it’s not the name his parents gave; it’s the name that Pharaoh’s daughter gave him, because she found him in a basket in the water, in the River Nile. As she drew him out of water she called him – in Hebrew, “Va’te’mash’hu” – “Mishu” is the verse in the Bible, somewhat of an ancient Egyptian – “to draw out” – “the water” – “from water.”

Why would you give him a name like that? And that become the name – that the only name we know him by. Even though we know the names his parents gave him, that’s the name that, um, he’s known as.

Explain the Kabbalists a beautiful concept: Because Moses was a “man of water.” That there are two types of souls: There are water souls and land souls.

Like water, things that are submerged in water, concealed in the water – Moses came from that world of thought. But his mission was to be a carrier, an interface, a channel between the superconscious and the conscious. And that’s why that was the name that she gave him. Whether she knew it or not consciously or not, but that was the name, because that was his role.

That’s why the Bible tells us that Moses, “a man of no words” – that’s why when God said to him, “You be My messenger, speak to Pharaoh,” he says, “I cannot speak, I’m a man of no words.” He uses different expressions, “I have – my lips are sealed,” or “Difficult for me to speak.” And God says, “Who gives man a mouth to speak? It is I. I want you to say My words. I’m not looking for an orator; there’s someone that has a perfectly honed voice.” Because I want you to express ideas that are beyond regular words.

And here’s the man of “no words” that left those words that are the best-selling book in all of history. His words have been repeated and continued to be repeated and studied and poured over and analyzed more than anyone else’s words. Because they weren’t just words, they were carrying the secrets of the hidden world – of water. So he was a water carrier.

And that’s why you find expressions of water always identify with knowledge. And I – book of Isaiah, beautiful verse about Messianic times, “There will be no longer evil or destruction in this world. Why? Because the world will be filled with Divine knowledge as the waters cover the sea.”

We Are All Water Carriers

We’re told that when the world was created it was all covered in water – even according to science, many theories believe that. And then land emerged. We, for nine months, we’re completely submerged in the embryonic fluids of – in our mother’s womb, because – and that’s why water is such a critical component in our lives. Not just drinking water to nourish us, but, you know, we go into water, you feel nurtured, you feel surrounded, you feel submerged like in a womb; it’s calming. Beach from property, yes, it’s beautiful sights, but there’s something about water that draws us because we’re naturally – come from a deeper world that we’re not able to articulate.

A man like Moses was that water carrier. See, each of us has the Moses within us. We all have that ability and responsibility to be water carriers, especially those that are born in this period of time.

What does that mean? It means to bring a message to others – a watery, a watery message. On water, as we know, is a cleanser. It’s associated with things being submerged in water. It represents what the Hasidic terminology and mystical terminology is called “bittul.” It’s not – it’s not fluid, not solid, but not quite invisible. It has that – the solidity, solidness. And solid things, concrete, are inflexible; water is constitute – continuously fluid, continuously mobile. Whatever you put in water is submerged within it. That’s what true humility, modesty – suspending yourself in the face of something greater. That’s what it means to enter into water.

So we – carrying message of truth, carrying message of healthy knowledge – not information; we’re talking about intimate knowledge, the knowledge of life, the secrets of life. That’s what – we have to be water carriers, Aquarius. And that’s the energy of this month. Every month has its own energy; that’s the energy of this month.

So think about it next time you meet someone: Are you delivering to them a message from a deeper place? A message of inspiration, of warmth, of nurturing? A message that submerges them into something deeper, something greater? That when you’re covered in the water you feel that you’re part of something beyond you – exactly that sensation?

The Water Will Find a Way

So imagine if you saw your life as being a water carrier – not that bad of a job. Today with technology we can do it through social media, through messages, through email, other forms of communication. I’m right now trying to be somewhat of a water carrier; I hope I’m successful. And I hope you’ll do the same in your own way, through your own channels, and your own sphere of influence, and your own ways of reaching people.

There’s that parable, famous parable, “A Tale of Two Water Carriers,” but someone had experienced real setbacks and difficulties in life, didn’t know really how to deal with it. So he was told this, uh, this anecdote, this parable:

Every day the gardener would walk to water the garden. So he’d walk along a path, and he would go to the garden and water it, and that was what kept it blossoming, growing, beautiful, flourishing. But then something interesting happened. As he would walk down this path, people noticed that the left side of the path flowers began to grow; on the right side of the path it was completely parched, nothing there.

What was the final reason for this phenomena? Until someone pointed out that in his – in his, uh, watering pot, in his “deli,” in his pail, there was a hole. And as he was walking along the path, the hole was on the left side, so water would leak out onto the ground and ultimately cause these flowers to start growing. The right side was that the pail was complete.

Now you think a hole in the pap – and the pail is a bad thing. But even here you see – no, that leak is what brought those flowers to grow.

So in life, sometimes watering something is not always what we do intentionally. Sometimes it’s something we may not even be perfect in, but still water is coming out of us. So remember, even things that sometimes seem imperfect – “a crack,” as Leonard Cohen says, “Forget your perfect offering; life is filled with cracks, that’s how the light gets in.” Yes, and that’s how the water gets out and makes things grow.

So being “water carrier” doesn’t mean you have to be a perfect person; it means is to always be in that mode of sharing, are bringing light or bringing water or bringing sustenance, energy, vitality, refreshing, revitalizing people. You see someone’s a little down, saying a kind word, that’s the message, my friends.

Become a Water Carrier

And all of us are truly water carriers – think about it, put yourself in that mode, try it out, even once a day, especially during this month. You’ll be surprised at the results. You will cause flowers to grow, often in places you wouldn’t even have imagined. Because when we water things, that’s how flowers grow; you can’t pull the flower out of the ground, you have to water it.

Same thing with souls: You nurture people, you validate them, kind words, something warm, water them, and you – and love blossoms. That’s how we curt – nurture and we nourish and we feed each other.

So my dear fellow water carrier, do your job well. And please share this with others; imagine each of us in our own way doing this, what kind of world we would create, what kind of flowers would be growing.

That’s our commitment. Simon Jacobson here, Meaningful Life Center, meaningfullife.com. If you enjoyed this message please share it with others; love to hear your feedback, thoughts, comments. And with technology today it’s very easy to just pass this on to someone else – just press the button. Be well, be blessed, and do your mission well. Serve well, water everyone you come in contact with. Thank you.

The Lion Within: Finding Harmony in the Month of Leo

Hi everyone, Simon Jacobson here, welcome to another episode of Meaningful Life! This is part of our zodiac series, “What the Stars Say About You: Leo.” We’re now in the month of Leo, and this program is dedicated by Martha Real in honor of humility. Let’s hope everybody’s been well.

We began this series around five or six months ago, and we’re covering, once a month, the sign of that month. Now we are in, uh, as I said, Leo, which follows the previous, Cancer. All these programs can be seen on our YouTube channel as well as our other platforms, so check it out and, and I hope this will be meaningful.

So as we’ve discussed many times, the signs are essentially predispositions. Think of them as archetypes. Just as different people are born with different personality types, each of us is born with certain predispositions. So Leo, which of course is the word for lion, in Hebrew, it’s aryeh – that’s the Hebrew word for lion. A lion immediately evokes certain reactions. We all think of a lion, powerful, awesome, certain regality. Even the lion is referred to often as the king, the king. And we’ve all seen The Wizard of Oz, the king – perhaps lacking courage – but still a king. The Talmud does tell us that the mal, the, the lion is the king of the, in the animal kingdom. And then of course, the roar of the lion, that roar. I don’t know if you know this but lions are from the few animals that actually roar together. Many animals roar individually.

So what does the lion represent in terms of spirit, soul, energy, personality type?

The Lion that Destroys and the Lion that Rebuilds

I’d like to begin by quoting a very interesting uh, statement from the ancient sages. This is called Midrash, a midrash, and it talks about this period in time. It says the following, loosely translated: that in the month of Leo, a lion will come and destroy a lion. So, in the month of the lion, a lion will destroy a lion, unconditioned, that a lion and that in the month of lion, a lion will come and rebuild the lion.

What is it talking about, this cryptic statement?

The lion is referred, the time of the lions referred to, this period in the year, this month of Leo. The lion that destroys, is referring to Nebuchadnezzar, the lion of Babylon, the king of Babylon. And what did he destroy? Destroyed the Holy Temple, which is referred to as a lion. On condition that in the same very month of the lion, a lion will come, and who is the lion refers to now, God. We say God, the roar of the lion, is the awesome power of the Divine rebuilding, that will rebuild the lion, the Holy Temple.

Now, what is the meaning of this statement? And what was the condition?

The Temple Within: Bridging Heaven and Earth

Well, let’s define what a temple is. The sanctuary is essentially, using modern lingo, is an interface between Heaven and Earth, between the transcendent and the mundane, between the Divine and the diabolical, a bridge, a bridge. We clearly live in a very material world, but we also have a spirit, a soul. The question is, can these two meet or do we need to compartmentalize?

So, Albert Einstein put it, E=MC², that energy and matter are really reversible, and actually two, both are energy. But on a deeper level, the same concept is that spirituality, spiritual energy, and material energy are just two forms of energy. And they indeed are not just, they commit but they’re really two of the same. So the concept of integrating our transcendent lives and our lives of survival are actually discovering that deeper unity that connects everything. And that’s what the lion represents.

As far as the temple goes, a place, a meeting place, where two forces come together, tremendous power, material power. But when harnessed properly, generates tremendous spiritual power. That’s what a lion represents.

Who Are You? Living from the Inside Out

So in the month of the lion, there was a lion that came and used that power to destroy. Used that power out of ego and arrogance of self-worship to destroy the lion, that bridge between Heaven and Earth, between spirit and matter. But it’s unconditioned. It’s on conditioned because the real purpose of it all is that every destruction builds some, brings something that’s even greater than what was there before. Like every challenge, every illness, brings a recovery that makes you stronger than you were before the illness in the first place.

So the condition is that the very same month of the lion, a lion will come and rebuild this connection.

So in psychological terms, what this means is for us to be healthy people, we need to have a certain seamlessness. A seamlessness between what you do and who you are. I asked a person, “Who are you?” They give me their business card. I say, “That’s not who you are, that’s what you do.” So some people giggle, some people just give you a blank stare and some say, “Oh, what should I tell you? I’ve been doing this for so long, what I do has become who I am.” And some will even sigh and say, “I know it sounds crazy. It’s like the ship tells the captain where to go or the captain is done the ship, ready to go.”

Who you are should dictate what you do, not what you do should dictate who you are. But we often live from the outside in rather than from the inside out. So, we respond to expectations, to demands, to pressures to deadlines, bills have to be paid. But we’re not physical beings on a spiritual journey, we’re spiritual beings on a physical journey. So it’s from your spirit, your soul, your very purpose in life and mission should be driving everything else. That’s the bridge. That’s when body and soul are in harmony. That’s when there’s an inner peace, where you’re not being driven by disjointed fragments, but rather, things are coming from a hub and then expressed through the spokes, rather than the spokes dictating the hub.

So it’s important to ask ourselves that question: Who am I? What drives my life? What’s my mission statement? And you’re able to answer that and then say, from the mission, I then express it through my different activities, my different thoughts, speech, actions, the different involvements I have. Then you have yourself an integrated life. That’s the ultimate lion.

Harnessing the Lion Within

And then you can take your material successes and the power and harness it, channel it, and direct it toward fulfilling the very purpose of existence. However, when there’s a dissonance, when there’s a severing between the two, that’s when all the issues come up, when people talk about feeling anxious, feeling out of place, feeling not aligned properly. You’re talking about something that there is not harmony.

Think about health. What is a healthy body? What does it feel like to be healthy? If you have any answer to that question, what it feels like, that’s really a bad sign! Health shouldn’t feel like anything. It’s seamless. There’s no sensation. The same thing on a spiritual and psychological level.

So Leo, lion, represents that integration. Or it can represent the destruction. Every malady, every challenge we have, every form of trauma or suffering, every toxin or pollutant, that has in some way affected us, whether it’s our insecurities or our fears, lack of self-esteem, is essentially the destruction of your lion. That’s why it’s called Babylon. Babylon, the Bible tells us, comes from the word confusion. Babel. The babble. The confusion of languages, the confusion of the language of your soul and the language of your body. They don’t understand each other. And the, and the rebuilding of, and the restoration and the reclaiming of your very dignity and its expression in this world, is the building of your lion.

And you’ll see people who often behave like a lion, in a sense violent, angry is due to a dissonance that’s happening. Not justifying it, just explaining it. And those that change the world with tremendous power, are due to that harmony where it comes together.

So similar to the previous month, but not much more lower scale, Cancer, talked about the, the crab that also has that paradox. So the lion, of course, is a more pronounced way, is a personal paradox. There are two forces at work and they can go both directions. A king can be corrupt, can be a tyrant, can abuse. But a king could also be noble and humble and lead by example, and use his or her power to transform existence. So the Leo personality type has those two elements and therefore reflects itself at times where it can go one extreme, to be a very sad, tragic, destructive experience in life, or the exact opposite, a rebuilding of the highest order.

Our purpose in life ultimately is to create integration, is to unite. I mean, the essence of all science is the search for unity, trying to find the common denominator, the threads that connect all the details into one harmony, harmony within diversity. That is the lion of our lives. We want to build such a temple in our personal lives, our emotional lives, our psychological lives, our spiritual lives, the lives of our families, of our communities and by extension, to everyone we can reach, everywhere in the world. And as this time of year, the time of Leo, the sign of Leo, where you have those two options.

Unleashing the Power of the Divine Lion

So who will, who will rule? The confuser of Babylon or the divine lion that takes his power and transforms a hostile world, a challenging world into a Divine Garden, into a beautiful environment rich person with each of us? And each person is able to express his personal, his or personal mission in life, the dignity. The dignity of your individuality, the dignity of your uniqueness, of your indispensability. And then when you have that working, all the power in the world is then directed, harnessed, channeled to a tremendous revolutionary change.

Now, some of us were not necessarily born in this period of time, we still have that personality feature, may not be as dominant. But the lessons to all of us, but especially to those born in this period of time, and it’s interesting in our hemisphere, in contrast to the lower hemispheres, it’s a time of heat, summer, summer heat, especially this year. And he too has both extremes. The passion of heat, the fire of heat, the perspiration, which on one hand can be very, very overwhelming and even destructive, or saheed also brings passion in a positive way to transform things. Those that have that fire, the zeal, that burning at burning power, that burning sense of urgency.

So as in all things, that paradox go both directions. May you and I and all of us use that lion within us to be a king worthy of the title, that changes, that affects, that influences, that inspires and empowers everyone we come in contact with. And if we do indeed see somewhere where this may be misused or abused, we do what you can to inspire, always in a positive way to redirect and re-channel that lion energy into something that really creates true and lasting change.

So I hope I’ve done some justice to a obviously profound and comprehensive topic. This has been Simon Jacobson talking about “What the Stars Say About You,” covering Leo. Taurus Strength: Embracing the Power Within

July 26th, 2024

The Strength of the Ox: Embracing the Power of Taurus

Hi everyone, and welcome to another episode of Meaningful Life. This time, we journey deeper into our series, “What the Stars Say About You,” focusing on the sign of Taurus.

Taurus, in English, evokes the image of the bull. In Hebrew, it’s “Shor,” sometimes translated as “ox.” Interestingly, when we view the zodiacal order, we see Taurus following Aries, the Ram or Lamb. This juxtaposition is key to appreciating the distinct energy Taurus embodies.

To understand this even more deeply, we must remember that Taurus is the second sign in the constellations. The first, aligning with the Hebrew month of Nissan (the month of Exodus), is imbued with the gentle, loving energy of the lamb. Taurus, then, ushers in a different archetype, a different strength.

The Rhythm of Life: Receiving and Giving

I’ve often spoken about how the zodiac and its constellations are like a symphony of forces. Each sign represents a unique energy, a specific window of opportunity within the grand tapestry of time. And like the threads of a tapestry, each sign complements the others, weaving a harmonious whole.

Let’s consider a simple analogy: the very structure of life. We enter this world as children, entirely reliant on the love, nurturing, and protection of others. This unconditional care, this validation and security, provides us with the tools, resources, and confidence to mature. As we grow, we transition from solely receiving to actively giving back. We begin to carry our own weight, sharing the load instead of simply having it carried for us.

From Gentle Love to Determined Strength

The mystics teach us that this same principle operates within the cycle of months and their corresponding signs. The first sign, Aries, embodies the lamb, gentle and dependent on the shepherd’s care. Taurus, the bull, represents the next stage – the strength to carry the weight, to persevere. As scripture says, “He has strength in his neck.” (Psalms 50:13)

In the context of emotions, where Aries embodies “Chesed” (loving-kindness), Taurus embodies “Gevurah” – discipline, strength, and restraint. We move from receiving love and nurturing to bearing responsibility, to shouldering the load.

The Dance of Love and Respect

Think of a loving relationship. Love, in its purest form, fosters closeness, intimacy, protection, and security. Yet, an excess of love without boundaries can be stifling. This is where respect, the hallmark of Taurus, comes in.

A healthy relationship requires both love and respect – a reverence for the dignity and space of the other. There’s a beauty in acknowledging the mystery and individuality of another soul, and this respectful distance allows love to breathe.

The Power and Peril of the Bull

Taurus introduces strength, the power to commit. However, this strength can manifest in less desirable ways: inflexibility, stubbornness, even aggression. We see this in the Talmudic concept of the ox that gores, highlighting the potential for Taurus energy to become destructive.

This aggression, though, is often a defense mechanism, a shield erected to protect vulnerability. Like the porcupine with its sharp quills and soft underbelly, we too sometimes project toughness to safeguard our tender hearts.

Finding Balance: Strength with Gentleness

True strength lies in balance. It’s knowing when to stand firm, to embody the unyielding spirit of the bull, and when to yield, to exhibit the gentleness of the lamb. It’s about harnessing the power of “Gevurah” without losing sight of “Chesed.”

The Exodus from Egypt embodies this beautifully. It was an act of Divine love, a top-down liberation. Yet, the month that follows, Taurus, demands something from us. It calls upon us to step into our own strength, to demonstrate our capacity for responsibility and action.

Owning Your Potential: The Taurus Within

In a world saturated with instant gratification, Taurus reminds us of the power of creation, of generating something from within. There’s a unique confidence born from carrying your own load, from knowing that you have the strength to manifest, to build, to persevere.

Taurus calls us to tap into this inner wellspring of power. This doesn’t necessarily translate to outward aggression. It can manifest as quiet determination, as unwavering commitment, as the inner steel that refuses to back down from what is right.

Unleashing Your Inner Strength

So, how do we access this Taurus energy?

Remember, the bull doesn’t sweat for leisure; it sweats because it’s inherently part of its being. True strength integrates effort seamlessly, naturally.

As we navigate this Taurus season, let us cultivate the strength to persevere, to stand firm in our convictions, and to carry the weight of our responsibilities with unwavering commitment. Let us embrace the power of Taurus, not to dominate, but to build, to create, and to leave the world a better place than we found it.

Aries: The Gentleness of the Ram & Spiritual Renewal

July 26th, 2024

The Gentle Strength of Aries: Embracing Vulnerability for Spiritual Renewal

Welcome, dear friends, to another episode of Meaningful Life. This program, focusing on the zodiac sign of Aries, is dedicated by Anthony Sutton in honor of his birthday.

As we journey through the constellations, exploring the wisdom embedded in each zodiac sign, we arrive at the beginning – Aries, often symbolized by the Ram. But does this powerful image encompass the full depth of this sign?

While astrological interpretations often link Aries with aggression, leadership, and persistence – qualities reminiscent of a headstrong ram – I believe a deeper, more profound meaning lies beneath the surface. Join me as we delve into the original significance of Aries, uncovering a message of sensitivity, humility, and spiritual rebirth.

Beyond the Ram: Unveiling the Gentleness of the Lamb

The Hebrew word for the first of the twelve signs is actually “Taleh” – a lamb. This offers a broader perspective: Aries encompasses not just the ram, but the entire spectrum of sheep.

Think about sheep for a moment. They are known for their docile, gentle nature. Unlike predators, they graze peacefully, relying on flight for protection. This vulnerability is key to understanding the spiritual essence of Aries.

The Shepherd and the Sheep: A Timeless Metaphor for Leadership

Throughout Jewish tradition, sheep and shepherds appear as powerful metaphors.

Why this emphasis on shepherding? Because a true shepherd embodies sensitivity, empathy, and unwavering care for the vulnerable – qualities often overlooked in conventional leadership.

The Midrash beautifully illustrates this point with a story about Moses. While tending Jethro’s flock, Moses noticed one sheep was missing. He diligently searched until he found it drinking from a distant brook, realizing it must have been thirsty. Gently, Moses carried the sheep back to the flock.

God, witnessing this act of compassion, remarked, “If Moses is so sensitive to one sheep among thousands, imagine the love and care he will have for my people.”

True leadership, we learn, stems not from aggression or dominance, but from a deep wellspring of empathy and sensitivity.

Aries and the Month of Renewal: Embracing Vulnerability, Finding Freedom

It is no coincidence that Aries aligns with the Hebrew month of Nissan, the month of Exodus. Nissan, derived from the Hebrew word for “renewal,” marks the beginning of the lunar calendar – a time of rebirth and new beginnings.

Just as the moon wanes and waxes, symbolizing the cyclical nature of life, we too experience periods of vulnerability and renewal. The key is to embrace these cycles with humility, recognizing that true strength lies not in denying our vulnerability but in acknowledging our need for guidance and connection.

The Paschal Lamb: A Powerful Reminder of True Freedom

Passover, the festival of freedom, falls during the month of Nissan. The symbol of this holiday? The Paschal lamb, a poignant reminder that true liberation comes from shedding the ego’s grip and surrendering to something greater than ourselves.

The ancient Egyptians, ironically, worshipped sheep as deities. They despised shepherds, seeing them as a threat to their belief system. Why? Because shepherds understood that true power lies not in worshipping created things, but in aligning ourselves with the ultimate Creator.

Passover teaches us to reject the Pharaoh within – the ego that craves power and control – and embrace the humility of the lamb. This surrender to a higher purpose, to a Divine Shepherd, is the essence of true freedom.

The Power of Gentleness: A Lesson from the Sun and the Moon

We often associate the sun with power and dominance. The moon, reflecting the sun’s light, might seem secondary, weaker.

Yet, consider this: lovers gaze at the moon, not the sun. The moon, with its phases, embodies the ebb and flow of life, reminding us of our own cycles of vulnerability and strength.

In a world that often glorifies aggression and dominance, Aries invites us to embrace the power of gentleness, to recognize that true strength lies in our willingness to be vulnerable, to seek guidance, and to dedicate ourselves to something larger than ourselves.

Embracing the Aries Energy: Expanding Our Horizons, Embracing a Larger Vision

Imagine a farmer tending his small but beloved plot of land. One day, a farmer from a sprawling thousand-acre farm visits. The small-town farmer proudly shows off his land, only to be met with a condescending remark about its size. The visitor, blinded by his own limited perspective, couldn’t fathom the love and care poured into that small farm. He was trapped in his own narrow vision.

Like the farmers, we too can get stuck in our own limited perspectives. We become the proverbial “big fish in a small pond,” unaware of the vastness that lies beyond our immediate experience.

Aries challenges us to step outside our comfort zones, to expand our horizons, and acknowledge that there’s always more to learn, more to experience, and a far greater reality to connect with.

The Secret to Eternity: Living a Life of Meaning and Purpose

The ancient Pharaohs built pyramids, seeking to cheat death and attain immortality. But true eternity, the kind that transcends our physical existence, is found not in preserving the self, but in dedicating ourselves to something greater.

By embracing the energy of Aries, by cultivating sensitivity, humility, and a willingness to be guided by a higher purpose, we tap into a timeless truth: when we commit to something bigger than ourselves, we become an extension of that. We become part of something eternal.

May this month of Aries inspire us all to embrace our vulnerability, cultivate greater sensitivity, and dedicate ourselves to a life of meaning and purpose.

Gemini: Finding Harmony in Duality

July 26th, 2024

The Dance of Twins: Finding Harmony in Diversity

This is Simon Jacobson, and welcome back to Meaningful Life. We continue our exploration of the Zodiac Decoded, delving into what the stars say about us. This month, we turn our attention to the intriguing sign of Gemini.

(This program is dedicated by Laurie, Brittany, and Samantha Good, in memory of Bruce Good, beloved husband and father.)

There are countless ways to understand and interpret the Zodiac signs and their influence on our lives. They offer insights into our predispositions, personalities, and characteristics. In this series, I’d like to focus on the unique relationship between the first three signs: Aries, Taurus, and Gemini. Each carries its own message, yet they also beautifully complement each other, forming a progression, a journey of growth.

We begin with Aries, the first of the twelve signs, corresponding to the Hebrew month of Nissan, the first month of the lunar year. In Jewish mystical teachings, Kabbalah, Aries, often symbolized by the Ram, is followed by Taurus, the Bull. As we discussed in a previous episode, these two represent contrasting energies: the gentleness and kindness of the lamb and the strength and discipline of the bull. Both are vital, reflecting the polar opposites within us, each complementing the other, creating a necessary balance.

Now, we arrive at Gemini, the Twins, represented in Hebrew as “Te’omim.” The very essence of twins tells us that there isn’t just one, but two distinct entities. Yet, they are bound by an invisible thread, a shared origin, a common denominator.

The Kabbalists explain that existence is structured in threes: right, left, and center. This tripartite structure provides stability, much like a tripod. Consider the human body: the right and left brain connected by the central nervous system, the right and left limbs balanced by the core. The center acts as the foundation, the trunk of the tree, while the right and left represent the branches extending outwards. The right often embodies the gentler attributes, flowing like water, while the left embodies the fiery, more assertive qualities. Both are essential in human interaction.

Love, kindness, is the foundation of all relationships, the bedrock of existence. Yet, even love requires balance, a counterpoint. Just as rain, a symbol of love and nourishment, can drown a field if it doesn’t fall in measured drops, so too must love be tempered with discipline. This is where the left, with its strength and discretion, comes into play.

And here, in this delicate balance, emerges Gemini, the Twins: harmony within diversity. It’s the understanding that different beings possess unique personalities and perspectives. Gemini urges us to look beyond the surface, to seek the higher, transcendent force that recognizes the strengths in each individual, creating a synergy far greater than the sum of its parts.

This concept of synergy is beautifully illustrated in the Biblical creation story. The first day brings light, unity. The second day introduces separation – the higher and lower waters – creating diversity with the potential for division. Then, on the third day, this diversity is woven into a harmonious whole, a synchronized tapestry.

The first twins we encounter are Jacob and Esau, representing the eternal tension between matter and spirit, a struggle we all experience. We are torn between the need to survive, to meet our material needs, and our yearning for transcendence, for spiritual fulfillment. This internal tug-of-war manifests in countless ways: the conflict between work and family, between our selfish and selfless desires, between faith and modernity.

Gemini, however, offers a resolution, a way to bridge this divide. It teaches us that materialism and spirituality, while seemingly opposed, can coexist, even complement each other. It encourages us to find the spark of the spiritual within the material, to elevate the mundane.

This integration requires a rare quality: selflessness, a willingness to suspend our own needs and desires in order to experience something larger than ourselves. It’s the essence of true love: not just giving or taking, but a transcendence of self, a recognition that true fulfillment lies in connection, in the merging of two distinct souls.

Gemini teaches us to find this harmony within ourselves – to acknowledge the different voices, the conflicting desires, and to orchestrate them into a harmonious whole. But it also extends outwards, to our families, communities, and the world at large. We are all part of a grand tapestry, a cosmic symphony, each playing a vital role, our unique melodies intertwining to create a masterpiece.

As we navigate this month of Gemini, let us embrace the energy of integration. Let us seek the common thread that connects us, celebrating the beauty of our differences while striving for a world where harmony reigns.

And if you find yourself drawn to the energy of Gemini, use this time to share your gift of empathy and understanding, helping others discover the transformative power of harmony within diversity.

Is Your Destiny Written in the Stars?

July 26th, 2024

Is It Written in the Stars? Navigating Destiny and Free Will

One of the biggest questions we grapple with is whether our lives are predestined. Are we simply playing out a script, puppets in a play orchestrated by an unseen hand? Is it truly written in the stars?

From a purely divine perspective, one might argue that a Higher Power runs the show, that every twist and turn of our lives is preordained. But then, what is our role in this grand play? What meaning can we find if we’re merely following a script written before our first breath?

On the other hand, a purely secular perspective might suggest that everything is random, a product of chance and circumstance. Yet, isn’t that too a form of predeterminism – a life governed by the roll of cosmic dice, leaving us at the mercy of biology, chemistry, and the relentless forces of evolution?

Two Dimensions, Two Tracks: A More Nuanced Perspective

Friends, I’d like to offer a perspective that embraces complexity, one that acknowledges the intricate dance between the determined and the undetermined in our lives.

The deterministic aspects are clear: the sun rises, the moon sets, our bodies require sustenance, and a newborn child needs nourishment and love to thrive. These are the fixed laws of nature, the biological imperatives that shape our existence.

But what about our choices, our values, our aspirations? Are those too simply products of our upbringing, our environment, the circumstances we were born into? While these factors undoubtedly influence us, Jewish mysticism introduces a powerful concept: free will.

This is not to say we have free will over everything. We cannot choose our physical attributes or the family we’re born into. But we do have control over our moral compass, our reactions to adversity, and the way we choose to impact the world around us.

Quantum Mechanics and the Indeterminate State

Modern physics, particularly quantum mechanics, offers a fascinating parallel. While Newtonian physics relies on predictable cause-and-effect, the subatomic world operates with an element of indeterminacy. Particles exist in a state of probability, their behavior influenced by observation and other factors that defy classical laws.

Similarly, the Kabbalists teach that before the universe as we know it solidified into its current form, it existed in an undefined, indeterminate state – a realm of infinite possibilities. This concept is mirrored in the Talmud, which describes the moment of conception as a time when a child’s gender is not yet fixed, like unmolded clay that can take on countless forms.

The Power of Choice: From Astrology to Action

So, where does that leave astrology, the study of celestial bodies and their supposed influence on our lives? The Zohar, the foundational text of Jewish mysticism, acknowledges the existence of astrological predispositions.

Maimonides, the great Jewish philosopher, offers a powerful clarification. He states that while we may not have free will over our physical traits or circumstances, we have absolute free will over matters of morality, right and wrong.

Imagine a person born under a sign associated with aggression. This predisposition could manifest in destructive ways, leading to violence and harm. Or, it could be channeled into a profession that requires courage and assertiveness – a surgeon, for example, who uses their skills to heal and save lives.

Embracing Our Potential: Transcending Circumstance

The circumstances of our lives, like the stars, provide a backdrop, a set of inclinations. But we have the power to choose how we respond to them. We can succumb to the weight of hardship, or we can find the strength to rise above it, transforming challenge into growth and despair into resilience.

Think of the Wright brothers, who dared to dream of flight in a time when such an idea seemed ludicrous. They defied the limitations of their era, tapping into a realm of possibility that transcended the accepted laws of physics. Their conviction, their unwavering belief in the seemingly impossible, led to a revolution in travel and technology.

Finding Strength in the Face of Adversity

This inherent power within us – the ability to tap into a realm beyond limitations – is never more evident than when we witness individuals overcoming immense adversity.

When faced with unimaginable loss and pain, the human spirit can choose faith, resilience, and even love. It is in these moments, when the deterministic world seems to crumble around us, that we discover the boundless strength and potential that reside within the depths of our souls.

You have the power to defy your circumstances, to transcend limitations, and to write your own script in the unfolding drama of life. Embrace the possibilities, tap into the wellspring of strength within you, and never underestimate the power of your choices to shape your destiny and impact the world around you.

Virgo Love Lessons: Elul & True Connection

July 26th, 2024

Finding the ‘Virgo’ Within: A Time for Love’s Renewal

The Hebrew month of Elul, coinciding with the astrological sign of Virgo (Betulah, meaning “virgin”), offers profound teachings about love. While love, like oxygen, sustains us year-round, Elul opens channels for deeper connection, reminding us of love’s purity and potential for renewal.

Elul: A Call to Love’s Essence

Elul derives from a verse in Song of Songs: “*Ani l’dodi v’dodi li*” – “I am to my beloved, and my beloved is to me.” This beautiful verse encapsulates the essence of true love: a reciprocal dance of giving and receiving, a reflection of two souls recognizing and cherishing one another.

Beyond Need, a Transcendent Experience

Love, often mistaken for a need, transcends mere necessity. It’s a transformative experience, akin to standing before breathtaking beauty, becoming one with the experience. In true love, the self dissolves, replaced by a profound sense of unity.

This unity, however, doesn’t imply a loss of self. It’s about recognizing the inherent oneness of humanity, a spiritual connection exceeding individual desires.

The Power of Initiation: A Lesson in Bitul

The phrase “I am to my beloved” implies initiative, a selfless act of reaching out. It’s not about calculating what you receive, but offering yourself unconditionally. This concept of “Bitul” – selflessness – lies at the heart of true love.

Think of nurturing a flower. You don’t demand blooms; you water, care for it, and allow its natural beauty to emerge. Love operates similarly. It requires patience, respect for the process, and a willingness to give without demanding instant gratification.

Reclaiming Love in a Culture of Instant Gratification

We live in a world obsessed with instant results, yet genuine love defies such expectations. It cannot be manufactured or rushed, demanding vulnerability and surrender. We must resist the urge to treat love as a transaction and embrace the transformative journey it offers.

Rekindling the Flame: Small Steps to Profound Connection

Elul invites us to reconnect with the pure, innocent love we witnessed as children. While adult love carries complexities, we can still access that wellspring of pure connection.

Start small. Reach out to loved ones, offer a kind word, let go of pride and resentment. This month reminds us that even amidst past hurts, we can choose love, rekindling the flame within and radiating that warmth outwards.

This Elul, let us rediscover the “Virgo” within – that pure, unconditional love residing in our depths. Let us approach ourselves and others with renewed tenderness, fostering connections that nourish our souls and create a more loving world.

Conquering Fear and Anxiety: A Practical Guide

July 26th, 2024

Finding Calm in the Storm: Navigating Fear and Anxiety

Life can often feel like a tempestuous sea, tossing us about in waves of powerful emotions. Whether it’s the sharp pang of panic, the paralyzing grip of fear, or the gnawing unease of anxiety, these feelings can take hold of us, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and adrift.

In those intense moments, when emotions hold our inner house hostage, reason and logic seem to disappear like whispers in a hurricane. We can’t simply wish these feelings away, no matter how much we yearn for the storm to subside. There’s a Yiddish saying, “A kluger kop mit a narisher harts ken men nit reden” – “You can’t talk to a wise head attached to a foolish heart.” You can’t reason with a crying heart.

Creating Space for Healing

So, what can we do in those moments when we’re engulfed by these powerful emotions? How do we offer solace to ourselves or someone we love when they’re in the eye of the storm?

It’s like rushing into an emergency room. Our first instinct isn’t to launch into a complex medical analysis. It’s to provide immediate care, to stop the bleeding, to create a space for healing.

In those acute moments of intense emotional distress, the most powerful balm we can offer is the soothing presence of safety and security. A calm, loving presence, a hand to hold, a silent acknowledgement of the pain – these gestures speak volumes when words fail. They don’t erase the pain, but they offer a lifeline, a reminder that we are not alone in the storm.

The Soul’s Whispers: Understanding the Roots of Fear

While those acute moments require immediate care, it’s when the storm subsides, when we can catch our breath, that we can truly begin to understand the roots of our anxieties and fears.

Think of a young child, secure in the nest of their home. The world feels safe and predictable. But what happens when a parent doesn’t come home as promised? Worry creeps in, the sense of security is disrupted, and the seeds of anxiety are sown. The unknown, the unpredictable, can be fertile ground for fear to take root.

The mystics teach us that anxiety is often the voice of our soul, whispering that something is amiss, a deep longing for something more. Just like physical pain alerts us to an injury, anxiety can be a signal that there’s an imbalance within us, a disharmony that needs our attention.

Building Inner Strength: Four Pillars for Navigating Fear

How then do we silence the voice of fear and find our footing on solid ground? How do we build a life that isn’t ruled by these powerful emotions?

Embracing Your Song: A Symphony of Hope

Remember, within each of us lies a unique and beautiful song waiting to be sung. Fear and anxiety can muffle that song, convincing us that we are not worthy, not strong enough to share our gifts with the world. But by embracing these practices, we can quiet those voices and create space for our true selves to emerge.

We are not meant to walk this journey alone. Let us support one another, share our stories, and inspire each other to live lives of courage, compassion, and purpose. Let us create a symphony of hope that can drown out the noise of fear and illuminate the path towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

What is Kabbalah? Meaning and Essence Explained

July 26th, 2024

The Essence of Kabbalah: Beyond Secrets and Sensationalism

The ancient mystical teachings known as Kabbalah, for millennia shrouded in obscurity and secrecy, have recently emerged into the public consciousness. The word “Kabbalah” itself seems to hold a certain allure, a promise of unlocking hidden knowledge and tapping into the mysteries of existence. We hear whispers of the Kabbalah of money, the Kabbalah of relationships, even the Kabbalah of… well, you name it. The very air around the word crackles with intrigue.

But is this sudden popularity a true reflection of understanding? Do we truly grasp the essence of Kabbalah, or are we merely captivated by its aura of mystique?

Decoding the Essence: Kabbalah as Reception

The word “Kabbalah” itself holds a deceptively simple meaning: to receive. It speaks to a fundamental posture, a willingness to become an empty vessel, a humble recipient of wisdom passed down through generations, from teacher to student. This concept of receptivity, while essential in all forms of learning, takes on profound significance in the realm of Kabbalah.

Consider this: a skilled surgeon, performing delicate brain surgery, cannot rely solely on intellectual prowess. They must approach the procedure with utmost humility, recognizing the intricate complexity and sacredness of the human brain. Each movement demands precision, a gentle receptivity to the nuances of the task at hand.

Kabbalah delves into the very operating system of our souls, the spiritual DNA that shapes our being. Just as a surgeon approaches the brain with reverence and care, so too must we approach Kabbalah with a heart emptied of arrogance and a mind open to receiving its wisdom.

Beyond Acquisition: Embracing the Path of Humility

In many areas of life, we strive to be givers, to share our knowledge and expertise. While this is a noble pursuit, in Kabbalah, the initial and paramount step is to embody the role of the student, the receiver. It requires us to relinquish our need to be perceived as masters, to shed the ego’s desire for recognition and control.

True mastery in Kabbalah, therefore, is not measured by how much we can teach, but by how deeply we can embody the spirit of receptivity. It is in the act of emptying ourselves, of becoming transparent vessels, that we create space for the wisdom of Kabbalah to flow through us, illuminating our lives from within.

Unveiling the Inner Landscape: The Power of Letting Go

Think of standing before a breathtaking natural wonder. Imagine trying to capture its essence by dissecting it, analyzing its components, taking endless photographs. While there may be a place for such intellectual exploration, true awe arises when we surrender to the experience, allowing ourselves to be enveloped by its grandeur.

Kabbalah invites us to approach the exploration of our souls, and indeed the cosmos, with this same spirit of surrender. It beckons us to silence the relentless chatter of the mind, to quiet the ego’s insatiable desire for control, and to simply be present, receptive, open to the wisdom that emerges from stillness.

From Concealment to Revelation: A Time for Inner Exploration

For centuries, the teachings of Kabbalah were carefully guarded, shared only with a select few deemed ready to receive its wisdom. This was not out of elitism, but out of a deep respect for the power of this knowledge. Like a surgeon entrusted with a delicate instrument, those who possessed this wisdom understood the importance of wielding it with care, responsibility, and above all, humility.

Today, we live in a world yearning for meaning, for connection, for a sense of belonging. We are bombarded with information, yet often feel lost and disconnected from our own inner compass. The time has come for the wisdom of Kabbalah to be shared more widely, to offer its insights and guidance to those seeking deeper meaning and a more fulfilling life.

But even as we embrace this opening, we must remember the fundamental principle at the heart of Kabbalah: the power of receptivity. It is not about acquiring knowledge, but about embodying it, allowing it to shape our perceptions, refine our character, and illuminate our path.

As we celebrate Lag B’Omer, a festival of light and joy, let us ignite within us the flame of inner exploration. Let us approach the teachings of Kabbalah with humility, with openness, and with a deep desire to connect with the wisdom that lies within us all.

This Lag B’Omer, may we all merit to uncover the hidden depths within ourselves and experience the transformative power of true receptivity.

Emotional Intelligence: Finding Meaning Beyond IQ

July 26th, 2024

The Symphony of Mind and Heart: Cultivating True Emotional Intelligence

It’s fascinating how we humans can refine our emotions. What bothered us yesterday, those petty annoyances, those anxieties that gnawed at our peace – they no longer hold the same power. We pride ourselves on our intelligence, on the scientific breakthroughs, the breathtaking technologies in medicine, and every other field. We’ve explored the universe, tamed the elements, and surpassed even the strongest creatures through our minds, our innovations.

But a profound question arises: What truly defines intelligence?

We hear much about IQ (Intellectual Intelligence) and EQ (Emotional Intelligence). And then, of course, there’s AI (Artificial Intelligence), which, while not our focus today, presents its own fascinating questions, especially regarding the possibility of imbuing it with emotional intuition.

The very term “emotional intelligence” seems paradoxical. Emotions, by their nature, are impulsive, while our minds strive for reflection. This clash plays out within us almost every moment of our lives. We might feel drawn towards something, perhaps even something destructive, and it is our mind, if functioning properly, that steps in, urging us to pause, reflect, and consider the long-term consequences.

The Stages of Inner Development: From Reflex to Reflection

The ancient wisdom of Kabbalah and Chassidus offers a powerful model of human development, suggesting three primary stages where the cognitive and emotional intertwine:

  1. The Reflexive Stage: Think of a newborn child. Their world revolves around immediate needs and instinctual responses. They cry when hungry, tired, or in pain. Their behavior is purely reflexive.

  2. The Emotional Stage: As months turn into years, the child begins to recognize, respond, and even reciprocate. They learn to express gratitude, to share, to navigate social interactions with basic pleasantries. Their emotional landscape becomes richer, though still largely governed by impulse.

  3. The Mindful Stage: Here, the mind starts to regulate and harness the emotions. Education plays a crucial role in this stage, teaching restraint, delayed gratification, and consideration for others. While tantrums might still occur, they are often internalized due to societal expectations or personal shame.

True maturity, however, goes beyond mere control. It involves refining our emotions, transforming them from impulsive reactions to measured responses. Think of a child who kicks or scratches in anger versus a mature adult who, even when provoked, can choose a different path. It’s not just about suppressing our feelings, but about evolving beyond those initial, raw impulses.

The Mind as Guide, the Heart as Compass

In an ideal scenario, the mind and heart collaborate in beautiful harmony. Imagine meeting someone you’re drawn to. A mature person wouldn’t solely rely on that initial attraction. The mind engages in observation, analysis, and thoughtful consideration. It’s not about testing the other person, but about truly understanding who they are.

Think of the mind as a skilled captain, charting the course of a ship, and the emotions as the powerful engine, propelling the journey forward. The mind alone can process data, analyze information, and draw conclusions, but it cannot dictate what we ultimately like or dislike. It’s the heart that provides that vital spark of connection.

Emotional Intelligence: Beyond Logic and Calculation

Emotional intelligence delves deeper than pure intellect. It encompasses:

Emotional intelligence isn’t about suppressing our emotions, but about nurturing and guiding them. It’s about creating a dynamic interplay where the mind and heart collaborate to create a richer, more meaningful life experience.

Beyond Brilliance: The Essence of True Wisdom

Bertrand Russell, the renowned philosopher, was once challenged for behaving unethically despite being a professor of ethics. He quipped, “I am also a professor of mathematics, and I am not a triangle.” He separated his intellect from his actions, a disconnect sadly prevalent in our world today.

Maimonides, the great Jewish scholar and philosopher, offers a different perspective. He teaches that true wisdom isn’t measured by intellectual prowess alone, but by how we treat others, how we conduct ourselves in the simplest, most mundane aspects of life.

The ultimate goal is to integrate our intellectual and emotional selves, creating a beautiful tapestry of wisdom, compassion, and integrity. This journey begins with cultivating “Bitul,” a Hebrew word encompassing humility, selflessness, and the ability to truly see and appreciate another person for who they are.

We weren’t all born with the same levels of emotional intelligence. Some possess a natural inclination, shaped by upbringing, environment, or role models. However, like any skill, it can be learned, nurtured, and strengthened. It requires us to confront our fears, insecurities, and deeply ingrained patterns of behavior, choosing vulnerability over guardedness, empathy over indifference.

In the end, our intellectual brilliance shines brightest when it illuminates the path towards deeper connection, compassion, and genuine human understanding. May we all strive to cultivate this profound wisdom within ourselves and in the world around us.
