Being born into a bitter exile does not mean you cannot learn to dance in the redemption.
The oldest of three children, Miriam was a big sister to Aaron and Moses. Her name connotes ‘bitterness,’ reflecting the harsh Egyptian exile. She was also known as Puah, a whispering prophetess who foretold the birth of her brother Moses and the salvation of her people. she and her mother, Yocheved, singlehandedly guaranteed the future of the Jewish people by inspiring the women of Israel to uphold the purity of the Jewish family even in the bitterness of Egyptian bondage. At the splitting of the sea, Miriam led the women in celebration with tambourine and dance. The royal Davidic line stemmed from Miriam and the water of the rock flowed in her honor, turning the bitter into the sweet.
