A viewer asked: “I feel that I have lost myself after a life-changing event. How can I get back to the old me? How and when will I be happy again?”
Rabbi Jacobson answered: “Always know that you are not a victim of circumstances. Our identities are not defined by our experiences…The pressures and challenges of life are what allow us to discover who we truly are. And when we do get lost, a person has to remember to stay the course. You have within you all the resources you need to deal with any given situation…We have to rise to the occasion. Never over-identify with your experiences. You can suffer, but don’t become a sufferer. You can be in pain, but don’t become a person of pain…Healthy people never identify with their challenge. It’s a challenge; you have to deal with it; and you move on…”
