Where Are the Leaders? A Journey From Longing to Empowerment
The world hums with a peculiar dissonance. On one hand, we are blessed with astounding success and prosperity. Yet, a discordant note rings true: our society grapples with a polarization I haven’t witnessed in my lifetime. Battles rage, particularly in the arena of values, leaving a yearning for a moral compass, a longing for guidance. This begs the question: Where are the leaders?
Throughout history, true leadership emerged to illuminate the path forward. Leaders offered direction, instilled confidence, and empowered individuals to tap into their inner reservoirs of strength. Today, this very leadership feels like a rare commodity, leaving many feeling adrift.
You see, each of us possesses boundless potential, a wellspring of inner resources. Yet, the demands of daily life, the pressures, and expectations can often obscure this truth. We find ourselves mired in the quicksand of the everyday, struggling to lift our gaze and perceive the bigger picture. This is where true leaders come in – they provide that crucial vantage point. But if they are absent, are failing us, where do we turn?
The Yearning for Vision: A Crisis of Our Times
The vacuum of leadership is palpable. A pervasive cynicism has taken root, a sense that those in positions of power are as fallible, as driven by self-interest as any. The cacophony of partisan politics, the sensationalism of media, all contribute to a societal spectacle that feels less amusing and more and more tragic.
The human condition yearns for connection, for contentment, for love and belonging. We strive for success, for families that thrive, for a sense of purpose. Our commonalities, the shared experiences of joy and sorrow, far outweigh our differences. Yet, we struggle to tap into that unifying force.
This is where true leadership shines. It transcends differences, weaving together diverse perspectives to reveal a shared vision, a tapestry richer and stronger than any single thread. Tell me, can you name a leader today who embodies this unifying spirit? A leader in business, politics, entertainment, or any sphere who champions a vision greater than self-interest?
A Leadership Vacuum or a Crisis of Self?
Some might argue that every generation receives the leadership it deserves. A lost society begets lost leaders, leaving the blind to lead the blind. But is this a sufficient answer? Do we resign ourselves to a fate devoid of guidance and inspiration?
I have always believed that the seeds of leadership reside within each of us. However, our subjectivity, the immediacy of our needs, can cloud our judgment. We crave the guidance of a conductor, someone to help us rise above the noise and discern our priorities.
Yet, across the globe, a different narrative prevails – one of power grabs, control, and pandering. Where is the leader who dares to articulate a vision that transcends personal gain, who inspires us to embrace a purpose larger than ourselves?
We live in an age rife with technological marvels and medical breakthroughs. Industries dedicated to improving our lives flourish, driven by profit, yes, but also by the potential to alleviate human suffering. Yet, even amidst such progress, a deeper yearning persists. Take Artificial Intelligence, for example – a revolutionary force poised to reshape our world. While debates center on its potential for good or ill, its ethical implications, where are the leaders who can guide us through this uncharted territory? Where is the discourse that transcends profit margins and grapples with the profound impact of AI on humanity?
From Longing to Action: Embracing Our Inner Leaders
This brings us to a pivotal question: What can we do? If the leaders we seek are absent, then we must become the leaders ourselves. We must cultivate within ourselves the qualities we yearn for in others and, in doing so, demand those same qualities from those around us.
The chasm between follower and leader is deceptively simple: the follower seeks external direction, often out of insecurity, fear, or inertia. The leader, however, recognizes the unique spark within, the soul’s calling that transcends external validation.
To embark on this journey of leadership, we must first connect with our own souls. It is in this sacred space that we discover our unique purpose, our calling. This doesn’t necessitate grand gestures or sweeping societal change; it begins with small, intentional acts of leadership woven into the fabric of our everyday lives.
-
Initiate: Break free from the inertia of reaction and embrace proactivity. Share a thought-provoking message, visit someone in need, commit to a daily act of kindness. It is in these seemingly small gestures that we ignite the flame of leadership within and inspire those around us.
-
Nourish Your Soul: Dedicate time each day to connect with your inner self. Engage in stimulating reading, explore spiritual ideas, find solace in music or prayer. Nurturing your soul is not selfish; it’s an act of empowerment that fuels your ability to lead.
-
Spread the Light: As you cultivate your inner leader, share that light with others. Encourage those around you to embrace their potential, to initiate positive change. Remember, leadership is contagious – it ripples outward, transforming families, communities, and ultimately, the world.
Our Shared Responsibility: Tipping the Scales of Redemption
My teacher, the Rebbe, often spoke of the world as a delicately balanced scale. Each act of goodness, each kind word, each loving thought tips those scales towards redemption. This principle, my friends, applies to each of us.
Do not underestimate the power of your actions. By embracing your inner leader, you contribute to a collective shift, a rising tide of consciousness that can reshape our world.
Yes, the lack of visible, inspiring leadership can be disheartening. But despair is not an option. We have the power, each and every one of us, to become the leaders we long for. Discover your unique song, nurture it, and sing it with courage and conviction. The world is waiting to hear your melody.
This, to me, is the greatest tribute we can pay to the memory of true leaders – to embody their spirit, to continue their work, and to inspire future generations to do the same. Let us commit to leaving every space we enter, every interaction we have, a little brighter, a little more hopeful than we found it. That is the power, and the responsibility, of true leadership.
This reflection was inspired by the teachings of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (the Rebbe) and his profound impact on my life and work. The Unveiling: Why Does Kabbalah Captivate Us?
The ancient mystical teachings known as Kabbalah – for millennia an enigma, shrouded in secrecy – have recently emerged into the public consciousness, even becoming, dare we say, fashionable. The very word “Kabbalah” seems to hold a certain allure. Add “the Kabbalah of” before anything – money, relationships, even Donald Trump (just kidding!) – and instantly, intrigue follows. It appears that what was once concealed is now in vogue. But is this truly the case?
Do we really know what Kabbalah is? To even begin to grasp its essence, we must first ask: what does the word “Kabbalah” actually mean? Many would say it refers to the secrets of existence, the hidden workings of the cosmos. But is that truly the definition, or even what the teachings impart? And even if so, what does “secrets of the cosmos” really signify?
The Essence of Reception
The word “Kabbalah,” surprisingly, has a deceptively simple meaning: to receive or reception. You might wonder, what does receiving have to do with mystical teachings? This, my friends, is the key to unlocking the profound wisdom of Kabbalah.
While all knowledge is transmitted from teacher to student, parent to child, generation to generation – requiring the student to be in a receptive mode – when it comes to Kabbalah, this receptive state, this being a vessel, is paramount. This is why the entire study is called “Kabbalah,” for two fundamental reasons:
-
Lineage of Transmission: To ensure purity and impact, these teachings are best conveyed from teacher to student, preserving their integrity through a sacred chain of transmission. You receive from someone who has received before you. While this holds true for all knowledge, the subtler and more profound the wisdom, the more crucial this direct transmission becomes.
-
Cultivating Humility: Kabbalah demands a posture of humility. It’s not about imposing your own ideas or claiming mastery. It’s about recognizing yourself as an empty vessel, a channel for something infinitely greater. This humility, this selflessness, is essential for grasping the spiritual DNA, the inner workings of existence and our place within it.
Think of it like delicate surgery. While all surgical procedures demand a skilled hand, the more intricate the operation – like brain surgery – the more crucial the surgeon’s expertise and precision become. Similarly, in Kabbalah, we are dealing with the most sensitive, nuanced aspects of life, death, and the soul. Arrogance, with its inherent biases and prejudices, has no place here. Instead, we need the humility of a lifelong student, ever-open to receiving, ever-mindful of the gravity and responsibility inherent in these teachings.
Beyond Acquisition: Embracing the Kabbalistic State
In life, we often oscillate between being givers and takers, receivers and transmitters. Early on, we are primarily in a state of reception. Like sponges, we absorb knowledge from our parents, teachers, and environment. As we mature, we begin to master this information, eventually becoming teachers ourselves. A healthy individual embodies both roles, transitioning between student and teacher, always recognizing the importance of continuous learning.
However, when it comes to matters of the heart and soul, to the very essence of who we are, the Kabbalistic mode of reception becomes even more vital. We are not merely acquiring information; we are embarking on a journey of transformation. We yearn for teachings that resonate with integrity, shared by individuals who embody the compassion and empathy they espouse.
The Paradox of Seeking and Letting Go
Consider the story of Abraham. In his quest for truth, he rejected the idolatry of his father and society, venturing into the vastness of nature. He questioned the sun, moon, and stars, ultimately realizing that creation itself could not be the ultimate source. This relentless search led him to a profound realization: his pursuit, while admirable, might be hindering his ability to truly connect with the Divine. It was in the act of letting go, of surrendering to a state of receptive silence, that God emerged.
This paradox of seeking and letting go lies at the heart of Kabbalah. It’s not about aggressively pursuing knowledge, but about creating space for it to emerge from within. Think of standing before a breathtaking natural wonder. The moment we attempt to capture, analyze, or explain it, we lose the essence of the experience. True connection requires us to relinquish control, to stand in awe and allow ourselves to be enveloped by the moment.
This surrender, this emptying of ourselves, is what allows our soul to speak. It’s about approaching these teachings not with a sense of entitlement or acquisition, but with the humility of a servant, recognizing ourselves as vessels for a higher truth.
The Inner Workings: A Glimpse into Hidden Dimensions
This brings us to the concept of “sechel” – the concealed or hidden intelligence, what some call the subconscious or unconscious. I prefer the term “superconscious,” as it reflects a realm beyond our ordinary awareness. While we may not have direct access to this realm, our conscious mind can tap into its wisdom through a subtle bridge, a valve that regulates the flow of insight.
Kabbalah teaches that this valve can be opened through two essential practices:
- Diligent Effort: We must engage in consistent study and reflection, not passively waiting for enlightenment to strike.
- Selfless Devotion: It’s about aligning ourselves with something larger than ourselves, letting go of ego and embracing humility.
The more we cultivate these qualities, the more we open ourselves to the whispers of our soul, to the subtle guidance that emanates from the superconscious realm. This is the essence of Kabbalistic study – not the accumulation of knowledge, but the transformation of the self.
Celebrating the Bridge: Lag B’Omer and Beyond
On Lag B’Omer, we commemorate Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a master Kabbalist who embodied this seamless integration of inner and outer, spiritual and material. His life and teachings offer a profound message: the true power of Kabbalah lies not in esoteric knowledge alone, but in its ability to transform us from within, empowering us to bring light and healing to a world in desperate need.
As we celebrate Lag B’Omer, let us remember the childlike wonder, the humility, and selflessness that allow us to connect with the deepest truths within ourselves and the universe. Let us approach Kabbalah not as a conquest, but as a homecoming, a journey into the very heart of who we truly are.
This Lag B’Omer, may we merit to open those inner channels, allowing the wisdom of Kabbalah to illuminate our lives and guide us towards a brighter future.

A Turning Point: Finding Meaning in Tragedy
The image is seared into our collective memory: Former President Trump, a figure of immense prominence, standing before a crowd in rural Pennsylvania, the idyllic backdrop jarringly interrupted by the sudden turn of his head, the instinctive flinch as gunshots rang out. In that split second, the world held its breath.
We’ve witnessed attacks on leaders before, yet the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump, broadcast instantly across the globe, feels different. It has captivated the nation, forcing us to confront a chilling reality: violence, so often a specter lurking in the shadows, can rear its head in the most unexpected moments.
The question that lingers, heavy in the air, is this: is this just another tragic news cycle, soon to be replaced by the next, or is it a watershed moment, a turning point in our national narrative?
The great Maimonides, a beacon of wisdom across centuries, teaches us that tragedy, while never justified, is rarely random. It is a wakeup call, a thunderclap meant to stir us from our slumber and force us to confront uncomfortable truths about ourselves and our world.
The Roots of Violence and the Antidote of Morality
To understand an act as unthinkable as attempted murder, we must look beyond the surface. While mental illness and external triggers undoubtedly play a role, we must grapple with a fundamental question: what restrains us from hurting another human being? Is it fear of consequence? Societal pressure? Or is it something deeper, something ingrained in the very fabric of our being?
The answer, as the Founding Fathers recognized when building this nation, lies in morality. The Declaration of Independence, a document forged in the fires of revolution, proclaims that all men are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,” including “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Why invoke a Creator? Because they understood that morality, if rooted solely in human constructs, becomes subjective, fluid, open to manipulation. It is only when we acknowledge a higher authority, a force that transcends the limits of human fallibility, that we establish an unshakeable foundation for our values.
This principle echoes the very first of the Ten Commandments: “I am the Lord your God.” It is an acknowledgment of accountability, a reminder that our actions have repercussions beyond the earthly realm. It is this understanding, woven into the DNA of our nation, that has served as the bedrock of our laws and our aspirations.
A Call to Action: Reigniting Our Moral Compass
The recent attack, in its starkness, lays bare the fragility of a society where this foundational principle has eroded. When we lose sight of our inherent value as creations of a divine hand, when the sanctity of human life is diminished, the path towards violence becomes tragically clear.
But this moment of reckoning, however painful, presents an opportunity. We must seize it. We must launch a revolution of the spirit, a revitalization of the moral core that has always been the true source of America’s strength.
This is not about imposing any one religion or belief system, but about reigniting a national conversation around the timeless values that bind us:
- Teaching our children, from the youngest age, that we are all interconnected, each life a reflection of the Divine.
- Promoting a culture of respect and empathy, where disagreements are navigated with civility and understanding, not anger and violence.
- Holding our leaders accountable for fostering a climate of unity and responsibility, rejecting rhetoric that incites division and hatred.
A Brighter Future, Forged in the Crucible of Challenge
We cannot erase the pain of what has transpired, nor can we offer guarantees for the future. But we can choose how we respond. We can allow this moment to paralyze us with fear, or we can allow it to catalyze us into action.
The world is watching. Let us show them that even in the face of darkness, the human spirit, guided by a higher purpose, can rise to meet the challenge. Let us build a world where such acts become unthinkable, not through fear of retribution, but through the radiant force of our collective commitment to a more just, compassionate, and truly moral society.
This is the legacy we must strive to create. This is how we honor the victims, comfort those who grieve, and ensure that even from the depths of tragedy, hope can emerge.

Beyond Brilliance: The Power of Emotional Intelligence
It’s fascinating how we humans, with all our intellectual prowess, our scientific breakthroughs, and technological marvels, still grapple with the essence of true intelligence. We’ve conquered the cosmos, tamed the elements, and surpassed creatures far stronger, all thanks to our innovative minds. Yet, a fundamental question lingers: what does it truly mean to be intelligent?
A high IQ, while impressive, doesn’t guarantee wisdom or emotional maturity. We’ve all encountered brilliant minds lacking in common sense, individuals with vast knowledge but stunted emotional growth. This brings us to the forefront of modern psychology – Emotional Intelligence (EI).
While IQ represents our intellectual capacity, EI delves into the realm of understanding and managing our emotions and those of others. It’s the compass guiding our intellect, ensuring our brilliance translates into meaningful interactions and a fulfilling life.
The Dance Between Mind and Heart
Imagine a newborn child. Their world revolves around instinct and reflex. Hunger, discomfort, and fatigue elicit immediate, unrestrained responses. As months turn into years, recognition dawns, emotions begin to blossom, and the child learns to express gratitude, share, and navigate social cues. This signifies the nascent stages of emotional development, intrinsically intertwined with cognitive growth.
In a nurturing environment, a child’s burgeoning mind learns to regulate their emotions. They discover that while impulses might surge, thoughtful actions and consideration for others are paramount. This delicate balance between our impulsive, reactive emotions and our reflective, discerning minds forms the foundation of emotional maturity.
However, this journey isn’t always linear. Even adults, seemingly mature and composed, can be emotionally hijacked in the blink of an eye. Think of road rage, heated arguments, or impulsive reactions to perceived slights. These moments highlight the ongoing negotiation between our head and our heart, the constant interplay of intellect and emotion.
Refining Our Emotional Landscape
True emotional maturity transcends mere suppression of our feelings. It’s about refining our emotional responses, allowing ourselves to evolve beyond the triggers and sensitivities that once held sway. What bothered us as children no longer carries the same weight. Why? Because our emotional landscape has matured alongside our minds.
Imagine a child throwing a tantrum, kicking and screaming. An adult, in most cases, wouldn’t mirror this behavior. Not just out of social decorum, but because their emotional response has evolved. The incident simply doesn’t warrant that level of reaction. Our emotions, guided by experience and understanding, have developed a more nuanced response.
The Hallmarks of Emotional Intelligence
So, how do we cultivate this emotional intelligence? It begins with cultivating empathy – the ability to step outside ourselves and genuinely understand another person’s perspective and feelings.
Picture a pregnant woman. A young girl, observing her, might innocently ask her mother, “How do you have room inside you for another person?” This simple question reflects a profound capacity for empathy, a willingness to consider another’s experience.
Sadly, many individuals, some even brilliant in their intellectual pursuits, struggle with this fundamental aspect of human connection. Their emotional immaturity manifests as self-centeredness, a lack of genuine concern for the well-being of others.
True emotional intelligence requires recognizing the limitations of intellect alone. While our minds excel at logic, analysis, and problem-solving, they fall short when it comes to matters of the heart. It’s our emotions that color our world, that infuse our experiences with joy, sorrow, love, and connection.
The Mind as Guide, The Heart as Compass
Think of a budding romance. We might be initially drawn to another person based purely on emotion, a spark of attraction. However, a mature individual understands that sustainable relationships require more than fleeting feelings. This is where the mind steps in, carefully observing, analyzing, and evaluating compatibility beyond the initial rush of infatuation.
The mind acts as the discerning captain of our ship, charting a course through the turbulent waters of emotions. It prompts us to engage in meaningful conversations, to observe how the other person treats others, and to assess their values and aspirations.
Over time, as our mind gathers information and builds trust, it signals to our heart, “This person is worthy of exploring a deeper connection.” Our emotional defenses slowly relax, vulnerability becomes possible, and a truly fulfilling relationship can blossom.
The Paradox of Selflessness
Herein lies the paradox of emotional intelligence. While emotions are often perceived as inherently subjective, true emotional maturity leads to a profound capacity for selflessness.
Think of a parent comforting a heartbroken child. The intellectual response might be to rationalize, to offer logical explanations for the situation. Yet, true emotional intelligence recognizes that sometimes, simply being present, offering a shoulder to cry on, and validating another’s pain transcends the limitations of words.
This selflessness, this willingness to put aside our own ego and prioritize the needs of another, represents the pinnacle of emotional intelligence. It’s about recognizing that true fulfillment stems not from always being right, but from fostering genuine human connection.
The Litmus Test: Relationships
It’s in our relationships – with our partners, children, family, and friends – that the true measure of our emotional intelligence shines through. These intimate connections necessitate vulnerability, empathy, and a willingness to navigate the complexities of the human experience, not through the lens of logic alone, but with the full spectrum of our emotional capacity.
We all possess the potential for emotional growth. While some might be naturally predisposed to higher EI, we can all cultivate and refine our emotional intelligence through conscious effort and self-reflection.
Embracing the Journey of Growth
Don’t buy into the narrative that separates the mind from the heart, relegating emotions to an inferior realm. Like a master gardener tending to their garden, our minds have the power to nurture our emotions, guiding them towards greater maturity, empathy, and ultimately, deeper fulfillment.
As we embark on this journey of emotional refinement, we unlock a level of wisdom and understanding that transcends the limitations of intellect alone. We discover that true intelligence lies in the harmonious interplay of mind and heart, in our capacity to connect deeply, empathize genuinely, and navigate the complexities of life with both wisdom and compassion.
This is the legacy of emotional intelligence – a life lived not just with brilliance, but with profound depth, meaning, and connection.

A World Awash in Violence: Finding Hope in the Face of Chaos
This week’s Torah portion speaks of a world drowning in Chamas – the Hebrew word for violence, bloodshed, and murder. It’s a chilling word, repeated twice, painting a stark picture of a world consumed by darkness. The world, the Torah tells us, had become so toxic, so polluted with this Chamas, that God, in an act not of destruction but of painful cleansing, brought the great flood.
The flood, while catastrophic, was not an act of vengeance, but a desperate, last resort – a washing away of the pervasive evil to make way for renewal, for a renaissance. Even in the face of such utter devastation, there was hope. Noah and his family, the righteous ones, were chosen to embody that flicker of light, to preserve humanity and rebuild a world purged of its darkness.
Echoes of Ancient Evil in a Modern World
The parallels to our own times are impossible to ignore. Chamas has reared its ugly head once again, staining our world with an all too familiar darkness. The recent atrocities, acts of barbarity so unspeakable, so profoundly disturbing that even seasoned veterans recoil in horror, are a stark reminder of the depths of depravity to which humanity can sink. The brutal slaying of 1,350 innocent souls – men, women, children, the elderly, even babies – screams at us, demanding acknowledgment. It serves as a bone-chilling reminder that evil is not a relic of the past, but a present and ever-present danger.
The prophet Joel’s words ring with chilling clarity: “The enemy land shall become desolate and a desert waste because of the violence done to the children of Judah, because they had shed innocent blood in their land” (Joel 4:19). The Psalmist too cries out, “Protect me from the man of Chamas, from the man of violence,” repeating the plea with an urgency born of fear and desperation (Psalm 140).
We find solace in Isaiah’s promise of a future free from the grip of Chamas: “Violence shall no longer be heard in your land, neither robbery nor destruction within your borders, and you shall call Salvation your walls and your Gates praise” (Isaiah 60:18).
Building Arks of Hope in a Sea of Despair
But achieving such a future requires action. We are not to stand idly by, but to actively combat the darkness. Just as Noah and his family were commanded to build an ark to weather the storm, so too are we tasked with building our own arks – spiritual sanctuaries to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the raging waters of hatred and violence.
These arks are built not with wood and pitch, but with the “holy words, sacred words of prayer and of Torah, of study” – words that have the power to uplift, to inspire, and to shield us from the negativity that surrounds us.
This is not a call for vengeance, but for cleansing, for renewal. Our goal is not to meet violence with violence, but to drown out the darkness with the light of compassion, empathy, and understanding. It is a call to recognize the spark of divinity within each of us and to nurture it, to fan it into a flame that can push back the shadows.
Waging Peace: A Global Imperative
This is not a battle for one faith or one nation, but a global struggle for the very soul of humanity. It is a call to all people of good conscience, to all who cherish life, decency, and civility, to stand together and declare: enough.
We must start by looking inwards, by rooting out any trace of Chamas within our own hearts. Every act of anger, every hateful thought, every hurtful word is a seed of violence that we must strive to eradicate.
The Path Forward: From Chamas to Kedusha
The journey from a world consumed by Chamas to one filled with Kedusha – holiness – is a long and arduous one. It demands constant vigilance, unwavering commitment, and an unshakeable belief in the power of good to triumph over evil.
But we are not powerless. We have within us the strength, the resilience, and the capacity for love that can transform even the darkest night into a dawn filled with hope. Let us, each and every one of us, commit to being beacons of that light, radiating compassion and understanding, until the words of the prophet Isaiah are fulfilled: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9).
This is our challenge, and our opportunity. The Deeper Meaning of Independence: Finding True Freedom From Within
The echoes of fireworks and celebrations on July 4th remind us of a powerful ideal: Freedom. A word deeply ingrained in the American spirit, sparking images of the Declaration of Independence, a bold stand against oppression, a cry for self-determination. But as we celebrate this outward freedom, a deeper question emerges: What does it truly mean to be free?
On the surface, freedom seems straightforward. It’s the absence of constraint, the ability to make choices, to live without being shackled, physically or otherwise. We yearn to break free from the control of others, from oppressive regimes, and even from the mundane expectations of daily life.
Yet, we can be unshackled and still feel profoundly trapped. Many walk among us, seemingly unbound, yet imprisoned by anxieties, insecurities, past traumas, and unfulfilled desires. They live in what a dear friend once called a “gilded cage,” surrounded by comfort and opportunity, yet lacking the most essential freedom: the freedom to be truly, authentically themselves.
True freedom, my friends, runs far deeper than outward circumstances. It’s not about the options available, but about the choices we make, choices driven not by fear or external pressures, but by our innermost selves. It’s about aligning our actions with the essence of who we are, with the unique song that resides within each of us.
The journey to this inner freedom begins with a profound recognition: We are not merely products of our upbringing, our experiences, or societal expectations. We are souls, imbued with a spark of the Divine, carrying within us inherent and immeasurable worth. This truth, enshrined in the Declaration of Independence – that all are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights – is not just a political statement but a spiritual one. It speaks to the very essence of our being, reminding us that our value is not bestowed by any human authority but is inherent within us.
To access this wellspring of freedom, we must embark on a journey of self-discovery, peeling away the layers of external influence to connect with the core of who we truly are. This process begins with:
-
** Recognizing the Influences:** We must acknowledge the profound impact of our parents, our education, our social circles, and even our own internal biases on shaping our perceptions and behaviors.
-
** Questioning Our Assumptions:** With courage and honesty, we must examine our beliefs, values, and motivations. Are they truly ours or echoes of voices from our past?
-
** Seeking Our Unique Song:** Each of us carries a unique melody within, a combination of talents, passions, and experiences that make us who we are. This song is not meant to be silenced but to be shared with the world.
This is no easy feat, my friends. The path to inner freedom requires courage, vulnerability, and the unwavering belief in our inherent worthiness. But we don’t have to walk this path alone. We find strength in the support of others, in communities that uplift and inspire us, in relationships that nourish our souls.
As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us not only commemorate the breaking free from external tyranny but also commit to the ongoing journey towards inner liberation. Let us strive to live not as prisoners of circumstance, but as architects of our own destinies, guided by the wisdom of our souls, singing our unique songs, and contributing to the magnificent symphony of life.
This is the true meaning of freedom, a freedom available to each and every one of us, regardless of our circumstances. May we all merit to discover this freedom within and share its light with the world.

The Birthday Gift You Never Knew You Had
We all search for strengths and resources to navigate life’s challenges. We long for a well-stocked toolbox, filled with instruments and methods to face whatever comes our way. Often, we feel inadequate, lacking the right tools or the knowledge of how to use them. But what if I told you that your greatest asset is always near, often overlooked and underappreciated?
You see, we don’t always look within, failing to recognize the vast potential residing in our depths. Like hidden treasures, these inner strengths often reveal themselves unexpectedly, during moments of crisis or unforeseen challenges. It’s in those moments of “rising to the occasion” that we uncover capabilities we never knew we possessed.
The Power Within: More Than Meets the Eye
The Kabbalists, Jewish mystical thinkers, describe our faculties as multi-dimensional:
- Revealed Faculties: These are the skills and abilities readily apparent to ourselves and others – our sight, hearing, intelligence, communication skills, etc. These can be measured and tested, reflecting our conscious, external capabilities.
- Hidden Faculties: Lying beneath the surface are our hidden capacities, the potential waiting to be unlocked. Like a car with untapped horsepower, or an athlete with the potential to run farther and faster, these strengths can be accessed through effort, training, and conditioning.
- Essential Faculties: At the core of our being lie the essential faculties, the wellspring of our soul’s potential. Accessing this level requires deep commitment, exertion, and a willingness to delve into the innermost recesses of our being.
Like the eruption of a volcano, what we witness on the surface is but a glimpse of the immense power simmering below. To access these deeper levels, we need to emulate the process of striking a flint. Just as a flint needs a forceful strike to release its hidden spark, we, too, must exert effort, struggle, and even embrace confusion to reach the clarity and crystallization of our innermost potential.
This brings us to the often-overlooked power of your birthday.
Your Birthday: A Cosmic Affirmation
Your birthday isn’t merely a date on a calendar, but a powerful testament to your unique significance. It’s the day the universe declared, “The world cannot exist without you!”
Let me share a story that profoundly illustrates this point.
Years ago, during a book tour, I received a letter from a woman in St. Louis. She was a successful executive, by all outward appearances, yet she carried a deep, hidden pain.
Years of childhood abuse had left her soul feeling murdered, her life a fractured reflection of the love and validation she never received. In her letter, she shared that a single line from my book, “Birth is God saying you matter,” pierced through the darkness, acting like a “silver bullet.”
For the first time in 47 years, she grasped a profound truth – her worth was not defined by her past, her pain, or societal expectations. Her existence, the very fact that she was born, was a testament to her inherent value in the eyes of God. This realization, sparked by the simple reminder of her birth, ignited a flicker of hope, offering a path toward healing and reconnection with her true self.
The Power of Knowing You Matter
This woman’s story, though born from pain, illuminates a universal truth – we all crave the affirmation that we matter. It’s a yearning that runs deeper than any accomplishment, possession, or relationship.
Your birthday, marking the day you entered this world, is a powerful reminder of this inherent worth. It’s the day the cosmos celebrated the gift of you, a unique soul with a purpose only you can fulfill.
This realization isn’t about ego or arrogance; it’s about recognizing the profound significance of your existence. When you truly grasp that you matter on a cosmic level, it transforms your perspective. It empowers you to:
- Live with intention: Knowing your life has purpose fuels a desire to live each day with intention, making choices that align with your unique mission.
- Embrace challenges: Obstacles become opportunities for growth, pushing you to access hidden strengths and discover your true potential.
- Contribute meaningfully: When you recognize your own worth, you’re more likely to see the value in others, leading to a life of genuine connection and contribution.
Reawakening to Your Birthright
Every day is an opportunity to tap into the power of your birthday. Just as the woman in St. Louis found solace in recalling the moment of her birth, you, too, can access this wellspring of strength.
Take time to reflect on the miracle of your existence. Remember, you were born an original; don’t live as a copy. Embrace your unique gifts, pursue your passions, and live a life that honors the profound truth of your birthday – you matter.

Are You Steering the Ship, or Is the Ship Steering You?
Think back on your day yesterday. How many of your actions were reactions – responding to a request, fulfilling an expectation, or simply going with the flow? Now, how many actions did you initiate – driven by your own vision or desire? Most of us would find the scale tipping heavily towards reactivity. And while there’s nothing inherently wrong with responding to the needs around us, living a truly fulfilling life demands a shift. We must move from simply reacting to proactively shaping our own destinies.
The Roots of Reactivity
Our journey into reactivity often begins in childhood. As infants, we are inherently reactive beings, entirely dependent on our parents. We mirror their expressions, crave their approval, and recoil from their disapproval. This pattern, while natural in our formative years, can linger into adulthood. The desire to fit in, to avoid judgment, and to navigate social pressures often keeps us anchored in a reactive mode. We choose comfort and familiarity over the uncertainty of stepping outside the lines.
Fear, too, plays a significant role. The fear of failure, of disapproval, or of disrupting the status quo can be paralyzing. It keeps us tethered to the familiar, even when our souls yearn for something more.
The Power of Proactivity
But consider the alternative – a life driven by your inner compass, guided by your unique values and aspirations. This is the power of proactivity. It’s about recognizing the immense potential within you, the “angel trapped in the marble,” as Michelangelo so eloquently put it.
Think of the innovators, the artists, the leaders who dared to defy expectations. They weren’t content to simply react to the world around them. They felt a burning desire to create, to contribute, to leave their mark. They understood that true fulfillment comes from aligning their actions with their soul’s purpose.
Cultivating a Proactive Spirit
The journey from reactivity to proactivity is not about sudden, drastic changes. It’s about taking small, consistent steps that build upon each other. Here are a few to consider:
- Cultivate Awareness: Start by simply noticing how often you react versus how often you proactively choose your path. This awareness is the seed from which meaningful change can grow.
- Take Baby Steps: Begin each day with intention. A simple practice like reciting the Modeh Ani prayer upon waking can be a powerful reminder of the soul within you – a soul that is inherently proactive and creative.
- Uncover Your Talents: What brings you joy? What are you naturally drawn to? Explore those interests, not because someone expects you to, but because they resonate with your core.
- Create Opportunities: Take the initiative to organize a gathering, volunteer your time, or embark on a creative project. These actions, however small, exercise your “proactive muscle” and open up new possibilities.
- Infuse Intention: Even routine activities can become opportunities for proactive living. As you go about your day, consider how your actions, even the mundane, can be infused with intention and purpose.
Embracing the Journey
Remember, becoming more proactive is not about achieving a perfect state of being. It’s about embracing the journey of self-discovery, of uncovering the unique gifts you have to offer the world. It’s about recognizing that you are not merely a ship tossed about by the waves, but a skilled captain with the power to chart your own course.
Seek out friends and mentors who inspire you, who encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and embrace your full potential. And as you begin to live more proactively, you’ll find a newfound sense of purpose, fulfillment, and joy. You’ll discover that the world needs your song – the unique melody that only you can sing.

Unraveling the Narrative Threads of History
The current conflict in the Middle East is saturated with deeply emotional narratives, making it challenging to discern truth from myth. One such narrative claims that the Jewish people are recent occupiers of a land belonging to others for centuries. This, my friends, is a misconception with profound implications.
-
A Presence Rooted in Millennia: The Jewish connection to the land of Israel is not a 19th or 20th-century phenomenon. It dates back millennia, long before the birth of Christianity or Islam. The Bible, a book revered by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, speaks of Abraham’s journey to Canaan, the land promised to him and his descendants. This land, purchased and settled, became the bedrock of Jewish identity.
-
Echoes in Exile: Even during periods of exile, the Jewish people never truly left Israel. Their prayers were directed towards Jerusalem, their hopes for return whispered at every Passover Seder and wedding ceremony. This enduring connection, spanning thousands of years, was not a sudden invention but a continuous thread in the tapestry of Jewish history.
-
The Myth of Absence: While other empires controlled the region throughout history, the Jewish presence remained. Even during Roman rule, despite the destruction of the Second Temple and the exile, a Jewish community persisted. To suggest that Jews were absent is to disregard centuries of historical evidence and the deep spiritual resonance this land holds within Jewish tradition.
-
The Question of Palestine: The very notion of a Palestinian state is a relatively recent construct. As Professor Bernard Lewis, a renowned historian, stated, the area now called Palestine was not a unified country with defined borders before the 20th century. The term itself derives from “Philistines,” a people conquered by the Jews centuries earlier, highlighting the complex layers of history at play.
-
Peace Through Mutual Recognition: The path to peace necessitates an honest and open reckoning with history. The Jewish people’s claim to the land of Israel is not based on displacement but on a deep-rooted historical and spiritual connection. True peace can only emerge from mutual recognition and respect, from a willingness to acknowledge the pain and aspirations of all involved.
-
Beyond the Political: The conflict in the Middle East transcends mere territorial disputes. It delves into the very essence of identity, faith, and history. To reduce it to a simplistic narrative of oppressor versus oppressed is not only inaccurate but also hinders any possibility of meaningful dialogue and reconciliation.
This is not to say that injustices haven’t occurred on either side. We must acknowledge the suffering of all innocent individuals, regardless of their faith or background. However, understanding the complexities of this conflict requires us to move beyond convenient narratives and engage with the full weight of history.
The yearning for peace resides in the hearts of all people of good faith. But true peace, the kind that endures, can only be built on a foundation of truth, understanding, and a shared commitment to a future where all can live in security and dignity.
Let us pray for the day when swords are beaten into plowshares and the children of Abraham, in all their diversity, find true and lasting peace in the land they all hold dear.

The Golden Calf: A Journey from Betrayal to Deeper Love
Hello everyone, Simon Jacobson here. In our Meaningful Life Bible series, where we explore the best-selling book of all time, we delve into narratives, stories, and personalities, applying their wisdom to our personal, emotional, psychological, and spiritual lives.
Today, we address a vital topic that touches us all: The Golden Calf – A Lesson on Betrayal and Reconciliation.
This program is dedicated by Yitzhak Weiner in honor of the 85th birthday of his father, Emmanuel Benitra Khaled Weiner.
Is there hope after loss? Can we rebuild after being hurt, after trust has been shattered? One of life’s most difficult challenges arises when someone hurts us, sometimes seemingly irreparably.
Though we wish these painful experiences wouldn’t happen, they do. Whether it’s a spouse’s infidelity, a friend’s betrayal, a business partner’s deception, or abuse in any form, these breaches of trust leave us reeling.
Two Common Reactions to Betrayal
We often react to such pain in one of two ways:
-
Denial: We ignore it, make excuses, minimize the hurt, even blame ourselves. We swallow the pain and allow ourselves to become doormats. This response, sadly, can mirror the devastating effects of Stockholm Syndrome, where victims develop a dependence on their abusers, feeling unworthy of better treatment.
-
Severance: We declare the relationship over, believing there’s no possibility of second chances, forgiveness, or healing. While sometimes necessary, especially with repeated betrayals, this response might close the door on a love that could be salvaged.
The Deeper Path: A Story of Forgiveness
But is there another way, a path that acknowledges the pain while holding space for healing and forgiveness?
The Bible offers a powerful story in this week’s chapter, a story of ultimate relationship, ultimate romance, and ultimate betrayal. It’s the story of God’s covenant with the Israelites, often compared to a sacred marriage, built on trust, commitment, and promises.
Just 39 days after the profound experience at Mount Sinai, the people, in a stunning act of unfaithfulness, build the Golden Calf. This iconic image, popularized by Cecil B. DeMille’s classic film “The Ten Commandments,” symbolizes a betrayal of their commitment to something greater than themselves. It represents the allure of worshipping material wealth, self-indulgence, and false idols.
This story, however, transcends religion. It speaks to the universal experience of broken promises and shattered trust.
You might think this is where the story ends, and initially, it seems so. God, heartbroken and angered, tells Moses to leave the people and build a new nation.
But Moses, the embodiment of empathy and profound love for humanity, refuses to give up. He descends the mountain, famously shattering the tablets of the Ten Commandments, not in a fit of rage, but as a deliberate act, preparing the ground for his impassioned defense of the people.
Moses’ Plea: The Power of Relentless Love
Moses returns to the mountain and confronts God, not denying the people’s grave error, but reminding God of the depth of their bond. He pleads for forgiveness, for a chance at reconciliation.
Moses’ plea, though unspoken in the text, may have sounded like this: “You created cause and effect; you created the hand that gets burned when it touches fire. I ask you to go back to the source, to the very essence of creation, and offer forgiveness. The human race is flawed; we make mistakes. I need You to show us that there is hope after loss, forgiveness after betrayal.”
For 80 days, Moses argues with God, twice the time it took to receive the Torah. He refuses to take no for an answer, digging deep into the wellspring of his love for humanity. He asks God to go beyond the limitations of cause and effect, to access the boundless realm of compassion and mercy.
And God listens.
Yom Kippur: The Birth of Hope and Forgiveness
Those 80 days, culminating in Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, represent the birth of hope, the birth of forgiveness. They remind us that we possess the capacity to reverse course, to repent, to heal even the deepest wounds.
Yom Kippur’s five prayers, unlike any other day, reflect the five dimensions of the soul: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and the fifth, the deepest essence of who we are. On this day, we access that fifth dimension, the place of infinite resilience where true healing begins.
Rebuilding from Broken Pieces: A Stronger Foundation
Moses’ act of shattering the tablets, symbolic of the broken covenant, also paves the way for a stronger foundation. When we rebuild after betrayal, accessing that fifth dimension, we forge a bond stronger than before.
The second set of tablets Moses receives represents this resilient love, tested by fire and emerging even stronger.
Finding the Strength to Forgive
The story of the Golden Calf teaches us about the infinite reservoirs of love, reconciliation, hope, and forgiveness that reside within us. While forgiveness requires introspection, remorse, and a willingness to do the work, it is possible.
Seek out a trusted friend, a mentor, a guide who can support you on this journey. Remember, “To err is human, to forgive divine,” precisely because forgiveness requires accessing a power beyond our limited selves.
Even when trust has been shattered, remember the resilience of the human spirit, the capacity for profound love that can mend even the deepest wounds.
